At what point would you stop recommending a Prius?

Corolla is smaller inside than a Prius. A Yaris is smaller than the Corolla and much smaller than the Prius.
Comparing a Prius & Yaris is not very valid, IMHO.

we're not really comparing for that purpose, because the o/p doesn't present a size requirement.

a gasser a/c is much cheaper and easier to repair.

For me a Prius is no different then any other car. I wouldn't keep it past 200k. I would have no worries buying one with 100k and putting a additional 100k on it. Way too much stuff on any car is worn out at 200k

Which was NOT available in 2008. The OP indicated they might be looking at a Gen 2. See their Profile.

I was glad to see no large black grille. My wife was later horrified at the look of the current Corolla. We bought the Prius.

If they made a Prius that looked like a Jetta I'd be all over it.

Yeah, I guess it's mainly the styling I like. Toyota should get their designers into rehab, and 'em have
    chat with VW.

I actually just bought a Gen 2 a month and a half ago - 2009 with 105,000 miles. I was more interested in responses I'd seen to other members and curious about general sentiment about how old is too old or how many miles are too many for your comfort.

That's pretty much my position as well, although in my case, I tend to keep cars until they break and/or have a repair needed that I can't afford.

Unfortunately, sometimes breakage is something you cannot anticipate There is a user here that had 180K+ on their Prius and hoped to make 200K. The car got totaled by a Camry running a stop sign. They are now driving a newer Prius c.

Very true. I got my current car after my Corolla got totaled at 176,000 miles.

I would not recommend a new Prius to most people hoping to recoup the Hybrid price difference through fuel efficiency.
In my case a Corolla may have made more sense but we realized that we would soon need something with more interior space to accommodate a medium sized dog. We tried fitting the dog crate in my 2008 Corolla and realized it was too small. Besides, my wife & I agree the big black grilles are ugly. So, we ended up with the Prius. My son is on his second one, so we were somewhat familiar with them.
