A big thanks to Wildkow too, for posting the information that led me to this project.
After doing a bit of research on this computing project, I'll admit I was impressed. And now I'm proud to be a part of this worthy research. I've forwarded the info to a few friends, and can only hope that some of them will join in as well.
In the meantime my little desktop will be doing its small part to save the world, and to keep team Priuschat moving up in the standings.

Did you set your verbosity to 9?
If you did, you would be able to tell us what happened.

i've been working on larger WU's. Each has been over 20,000 frames. Some only take 15 seconds per frame but when i'm using my computer they tend to run around 30 to 40 seconds per frame.

If you set the FAH program's priority properly, it will get out of the way and not bog down what you are working on. From what you say, it sound like it is working as it should. Otherwise, the FAH program would take as many processor cycles as it can get and you would get mad at how slow your computer runs . . . and cause you to possibly delete the FAH program . . . . something the folks at Stanford would dearly love you not to do.

Don't complain about how long it takes your machine to crunch a frame . . . consider how many points (credit) the WU is worth as a whole and how long it takes your machine to finish.

Some WUs have garnered me over 400 points per day, others as low as 81ppd. You just can't tell much by how long it takes to finish an individual frame.

Woohoo, just got into the top 25% of folders (rank of 149K out of 604K). Not bad considering I normally turn off my computer when going home, and always off on weekends. Of course, that does include people who dropped out or perhaps signed back in with another name and abandoned the old one, but I'll take my achievements where I can. OK, I do realize that second place is actually first loser, but hey, it was a long way from 11th place.

I think there is little chance of me taking over the #1 spot from GeologyRox/Karen. Her computer farm is apparently down to only two machines at the present time, but my lone machine still would have quite the fight on its hands.

It looks like bwiederholt and I will be swapping second place for some time . . . until tcooper185 inevitably closes the gap with his four-computer farm, or someone else with some heavy iron comes along. All it would take is Play Station 3 with the GPU crunching F@H for a couple of days and we all would be left in the dust. :blink:

 

I would have another 4 CPUs (two computers) cranking out WUs, but those stations don't have internet access very often. I asked around in their forums if there was any way to reactivate the queue feature, but the resounding opinion was that I should use those computers for some other distributed computing project. I think I ended up with climateprediction.net - not nearly as competitive or quick, but pretty cool to watch a model come together. Maybe when the current batch of models gets done I'll work out a way to allow the machines regular enough access to work for PC again. Regardless, thanks to all who participate =)

 

Well, I'm still hanging out at #9 in the team rankings, but I've broken into the top 100,000 contributors with my single computer.

But our team is doing awesomely well - our rank is 2,161 and we should break the 2,000 mark within a month. Keep up the good work, everyone!

As for the PS3, the folding client for the PS3 machine is rumoured to be out next month. Here are the PS3 threads on the stanford discussion list: http://forum.folding-community.org/forum55,ps3-client.html I'm PriusDaddy over on those boards. I hope we get the client soon, but I'm ok playing Resistance and Madden football until it comes.

Here is a question that I think someone else had earlier. But I've not seen an answer. What's with all the small WU points? I've received 10, 70, and 56 for 3 out of my last 4 WUs. On my other team, I've even gotten a 4. Maybe I've been slow on returning some high priority WUs?

So, I am guessing you have a computer that is having problems and shutting down the WU early and you are only getting partial credit.

Go here on you computer and find which WU numbers you recently crunched.

If you have invoked the -verbosity9 argument during FAH launch, you will see all information which was available to be recorded in the log.

I do genetic programming research and distributed programming, and I'm sucking the ever living life out of every machine around me when I crank up one of my projects. Around the time that I received all of the small work credits, I was implementing the ability to ship java objects across machines, and I was playing around with thread and process priorities. I'm pretty sure that had something to do with it, but I'll check the Folding FAQs to see how partial credits are calculated. I looked in my logs and see that the folding clients were having a tough time calling home and returning work units, I'm now thinking only partial results were returned home...

If it is going to be one louder than ten, I'm sure I don't want a PS3 running during the summer months. :lol:
My current machine is already loud enough trying to keep itself cool when the room is already warm . . . I think I'll upgrade my CPU cooler to a Thermalright HR-1 before the summer. I don't want to spend another six months with a noisy computer. <_<

But, on the other hand, if 11 on a PS3 equates into heating my office room one degree warmer in the winter, I just may have to get me a PS3 as my winter FAH folder and office heater. Running at 11, I'd be able to keep the central heat off - even on those cold 50 degree California winter days. :lol:

But if 11 refers to louder . . . I'd have to turn it off during the summer months.
