Some people stopped because when running the CPU versions, problems do happen. The best way to crunch, is with (a now cheap) 3D ATI or NVidia card. Even a lowly NVidia 8500 GT (worth about 20$) can crunch a full unit in 24 hours, and get 1500+ points. Also no noticeable performance problem on your computer, unless you play video games.
Congrats on the million! Mark should be joining us 'millionaires' in a couple of weeks - and there's plenty of room for lots more folders <g> :cheer2:
i'm running the CPU version... and i may be in the upper 50's but i'm comin for you all. once i figure out the GPU version perhaps you all can help me- i have the v6.23 CPU client, running on a AMd Athlon 64 X2 Dual 4200+ 2.21Ghz, 2 gigs ram. i have a radeon x850 video card. Would the GPU client perform better? i havent had any problems with the CPU client, but would prefer to run whatever's faster/better.
Fellow Folders, I joined your group a few weeks ago, but failed to note the exact date. Presently in 21st place which is partly due to so many who are not folding or have moved to another team. I am constantly perusing computer parts for a greater production but trying to resist the impulse. Roy
Well done, Mark! And welcome to all of our newer folders, including GrGramps, thedutchtouch, Toothydaclown, prberg and MO Dale, and anyone else I missed.
Yes! I wonder if in five years from now, when our computers will have sixteen cores, and we can crunch 1 million in a month instead of a year, looking back...
A million a month? No problem - all it takes is money and electricity! See: 51-card NVIDIA folding rig can crank out 265,200 points / day - Engadget Roy
Thanks for the welcome Jeannie.. but I've been folding since early 2007 (am I still considered a newbie?). I'm still chugging away with my uniprocessor console client (running on a few machines). Unfortunetly my Nvidia Quadro card is not on the supported list I'll keep folding and helping out the cause! Good job everybody. -Peter
LOL - I don't even remember when I started - Maybe November, 2006? But I THINK you're newer than me, and definitely newer than Wildkow, who started the team. That doesn't mean you're a 'newbie' by any stretch. I don't have ANY video cards, but I'm running a quad-core and a 2-core in addition to my single-core (my old single-core laptop just bit the dust, tho).
It's amazing what kind of PPD that you guys can pump out with the multi-core systems. Guess it's like you have 7 computers running? Well every little bit helps. Hope they are learning all about how those little proteins fold and maybe the research will be able to help people. -peter
I have 3 computers running but 2 clients on the single-core machine and 2 on the quad core, so 5 clients total.
Oh Noes ! Faith2Walk has almost caught up to me ! Quick...build a new box...with an nVidia Geforce 9800 GTX. A local guy had it on eBay within Canada, so I ended getting the card for 110 US$ including shipping. Got it working last night crunching. Compared to my other machine with an 8400 GT, where a % point takes 45 minutes...the 9800 GTX is 1.4 minutes !!! At least now I should be on par, and possibly I'll win another one, and replace the old 8400 GT with it. Also, the Quad Cores are coming down in price. In another year, I'll replace all my duals with cheap sub-100$ quads. Motherboards for AMD's & AM2 sockets provide easy upgrades, compared to Intel. But I digress....Faith2Walk....prepare to be bypassed !!! (and Gratz for the 1M points)
Yes, congratulations on passing the million point mark, Faith2Walk. And I've noticed Wildkow is putting more of his points to this team here in PriusChat. Way to go, gang!
We're adding a new desktop at home in the next couple of weeks, so that should give us a nice bump (we've been desktop-less at home since before I started folding). I'll keep eyes out for a supported video card or two to add.
Anyone else notice the spike up That's me ! Dual nVidia GTX 9800, overclocked a bit of course. Points are flying off ! So this reminds me, we have to recruit. One way could be as a contest. We need PriusChat resources to give away as prizes to new recruits. Like having to submit at least 5 WU's and be active before Dec 31st 2009. My of the video card sub-companies or game sponsoring companies do contests for users submitting WU's.
Great, Mark - close to 100,000 points per week. And congrats to Wildkow for passing the 2 million point mark.
I once asked Danny if I could send in something that he would post on the home page and he said yes. But I soon realized I have no skillz in that area what so ever. So if anyone has the skillz and any ideas I could ask him again. BTW how about a contest to design something for the home page and the winner gets a $25.00 gift cert. to the Prius store? I'll supply the gift cert if peep's out their will turn something in by May 1st? Anyone game? Wildkow
