i am going again. just need to reinstall every other WU or so. for some reason, i keep hitting ones that are down or empty.
I've now recovered from a sever Windows XP crash - one where it was best to take the box to a pro. In the mean time I bought a laptop as a back-up computer. Anyone out there F@H on a laptop? I tried folding on the thing, but was very unimpressed with the results. HP, Windows Vista, Intel Core 2, and 2 gigs of RAM. It was going to take 15 days to complete a WU my three year old AMD 64 box takes two days to complete. I tried turning off unneeded background resource hog programs - little help. After a day or so it started freezing up, so I deleted everything F@H and reinstalled. Same symptoms second time around. Now I've decided NOT to fold on the laptop. Now that I am back folding on the desktop, WOW are those PS3 moSheenes good! I dropped from #2 to #4 in no time at all . . . even if I weren't folding for a week or so, it's inevitable . . . I'm going down quickly! By the way, I'm not impressed with Vista. Buggy and crash prone POS. I'm already looking forward to Vista SP1.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Sufferin' Prius Envy @ Apr 21 2007, 02:30 PM) </div> you aint the only one. Dell just announced that they are going back to offering a choice bet XP and vista due to a hugely popular request to offer the older.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Sufferin' Prius Envy @ Apr 21 2007, 04:30 PM) </div> Yup. One of my machines is a Dell D620 laptop, Windows XP SP2, Intel Core 2, 1 gig ram. It generally is running Tuesday through Friday day and night and only occasionally over the weekends. Even with that limitation, I'm generally getting about 2 WU's out of it a week.
I just signed up. Folding my first project now. I guess they only upgrade team statistics every once in a while, so I'm not listed on the team yet, but I joined the PriusChat team. One thing I wonder about: I'm running the OS X GUI program, and cannot find any way to set most of the parameters that the web site claims you can set. There is a Preferences window where I can set Number of polygons per atom and Checkpoint frequency, as well as Type of work units to get, also Identity and team number as well as network settings, but nothing else. I can also set the type of graphic rpresentation. But I see no way to halt the program, other than quitting it, and no way to tell it not to access the internet if I want to download a big file. Any explanation, before I post these questions on the F@H forum? I left all the above choices on their default selections, other than a usernam and team.
As for pausing the program; right click on the Folding@Home icon in the toolbar and select Pause Work.
Wheeee! I'm one percent of the way through my first WU. <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(8AA @ Apr 22 2007, 04:28 PM) </div> Nope. There's no "pause work" choice in the OS X GUI version of the program.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(daniel @ Apr 22 2007, 05:51 PM) </div> You will show up on the team statistics within an hour or so after completion of your first work unit. Welcome aboard!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(AnOldHouse @ Apr 22 2007, 04:54 PM) </div> Okay. At the rate it's going, it looks like that'll be in about 4 days. It looks like it's doing about 1% per hour.
i wish i could tell you, i downloaded it to my Mac and it has yet to connect to download its first WU. i dont believe there is a pause option since it only runs on the lowest priority and automatically pauses as soon as there is a call to the CPU for another task. you can select quit
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(DaveinOlyWA @ Apr 22 2007, 08:56 PM) </div> That's odd, that your's has not connected. Mine connected immediately. Excerpted from my Log File, beginning with the very first entry: [21:47:56] - Ask before connecting: No < snip > [21:48:02] + Downloading new core: FahCore_78.exe <snip> [21:48:04] + 1143457 bytes downloaded <snip> [21:48:18] Completed 0 out of 5000000 steps (0) <snip> [03:14:31] Completed 250000 out of 5000000 steps (5) So it was at 21:47 GMT that I launched the application, and it was 21:48 when it began folding on its first WU, and it's taking just over an hour to complete each 1%. What you say about priorities is good. What about conflicts on the internet connection? Can it tell when I'm using the connection, and wait before occupying the connection?
