There is little difference between the Li-ion and NiMH pack in terms of performance in a Toyota hybrid. They are sized to have the same usable capacity. The Li-ion is being used to save some weight.

They've already done so with the Rav4 hybrid. In the last half of 2020, Toyota put Li-ion into the SUV. Now they are back to NiMH for the 2021 MY.

    Buy yes, import no

It is nearly impossible to bring a car from Canada to the US unless it is over 25years old.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.hagerty.com/media/archived/how-to-import-a-car-from-canada-to-the-us/amp/

if you want to try anyway
ask this place to import the car,
    if they won’t it’s impossible

Canadian Used Vehicle Auction - Canadian Super Sellers

Our country doesn’t care about safety or emissions and only care about protecting our domestic dealerships, if they did care they wouldn’t force you to only import antique cars. And indeed the US government only wants 25+ year old foreign cars brought over.

You can attempt to get Toyota corporate to send a letter of conformity but now days even if the Canadian car is 100% identical no car maker will send the letter as they just don’t care.

Importing Cars To The U.S. | Clearit USA

The only entities that seem to be able to do it are US side car dealers themselves and northern Minnesota is flooded with Canadian origin pickups at every dealer with all the legwork done,
sadly these places have ZERO interest in taking requests for a specific vehicle.

You could tell a Canadian dealership I want x car on your lot for import to US with the letter of conformity and see what they do, my guess is pound sand.

The unnecessary Reagan era grey market laws should be reversed and banned and we (private us citizens) should be able to buy and register any first world origin car we want without prejudice .
Our emissions and crash requirements compared to any other 1st world country are just for isolation and aren’t significantly different enough to worry over, in some cases our requirements are outdated and harmful to pedestrians.
Pure stupidity drives the grey market bans.

Oh and some nutcase will tell you there isn’t a ban on Canadian cars as you can buy 15 cars to crash test, perform emissions, light and computer swaps but yeah it is not possible for a non billionaire to bring over a low emissions high efficiency car from another country.

That makes it sound a lot like the two types are interchangeable since, if they required different programming in the ECUs it would be rather inconvenient to be switching the assembly line back & forth.

The current brochure which can be downloaded from the Toyota website, shows the Rav4 LE and XLE having NIMH while the XLE Premium, XSE and Limited have Li.

Personally, I'd almost rather have the NiMH pack in a vehicle with a small battery. I think there was some talk a while back about NiMH possibly being better than Li-ion in colder climates. Plus, Toyota has perfected NiMH over the years. The jury is still out for the Li-ion packs.

The site says the LE got Li-ion if made before January 2021.
