Salt promotes rust on bare metal.
Hopefully the design prevents "wheel splash" from getting places that it should not.......mostly.
Submersing the bottom of the car in sea water is quite a different matter however and it WILL go places that it should not be.

If you live in a "road salt" area, it is good to have an undercarriage rinse occasionally.

    bisco: There's your "resource" !! :)

No, I have not heard anything bad in this area; I see plenty of Priuses here in Wisconsin and they are all fine. I suppose the hybrid battery is encased so that's why the salt can't get in there.

My 2006 Prius II had to have a piece of the exhaust pipe replaced, which gave me lots of time to inspect the bottom of the car. It was flawless, just some rust on the exhaust pipe and some on the torsion bar that connects the left and right rear suspension. According to the mechanic, everything is great.

In Ohio, with a car that lived its first 7 years in West Virginia. No rust problems yet. I get under there occasionally and always like to look. I see a lot of rust buckets driving around, that scare me.
