It was after about four or five charges / purely short-range / exclusively in town driving scenarios that PIPPPIN started showing estimates of 30+ miles available in EV after a full charge. It has since gradually crept up to about 37 (after about 25 full charges). I've only "beaten" the CAR's estimate a few times... getting as high as 38.4 actual miles driven in EV one time. I always do my best to compare how many miles the CAR "thinks" it will go before battery depletion (I jot that number down in a little note-pad I keep in the car before going anywhere)... to how many miles were actually driven until the ICE had to kick in, at which time I simply take note of that number and then compare the two....

Much colder weather will be coming up very soon for many of us, so I'm confident most of our numbers will be going down. As for me, I think I'll be quite "satisfied" if our Prime can stay in the 18-21 EV-miles range on a single, full charge.

remember you'll probably be using climate to keep the windows from fogging up so subtract about 3-5 miles EV from that:cry:

Yes, I know... but to "compensate" for that I do NOT have a daily commute that I must make five days a week like many people do... so I rarely go out'n'about unless the weather is at least reasonably good by winter's standards... meaning not EXTREMELY cold (below 20 degrees or so) or when the roads are "terrible"....

Mine went from 30 to about 21 here in Maryland (it's been really cold and I have used my heater).
The one thing I find annoying is when I use my front defogger to get the front window clear it switches off the EV (which I get). The problem is that when I switch the defogger and the heater off, it doesn't switch back to EV mode. Even with EV Auto still on.

Ok, I’m still new to my Advance, but really haven’t had problems in 40 degree rainy days with fogging. I set the climate control to “auto” the light next to “auto” and “A/C” will be on. I set the temperature to around 63-65 (have a jacket on because it’s cool outside). I do NOT press anything that looks like a windshield defogging button.

This is all magic to me, but even with two people aboard breathing out humid air, the windows clear within about two minutes, and stay clear. The car remains in EV mode, the gas engine does not come on.

I’m thinking the only time I’ll have to push/select any button that looks like a windshield is if I have a snow covered, or ice encrusted windshield that requires direct application of HOT air generated by the gas engine?

Down to 20 miles per full charge now, and getting lower. Low 30's (temp in F) as an average now. Pretty sad to see the Guess-o-meter stating I have 14.3 miles left and a block later it reads 13.5. Drops a full tenth every hundred and fifty feet. There'll be a temperature, and soon, that I put it in HV every time I start off and won't worry about it until spring when it begins to warm up again.

I assume you're using the heater a lot?
    Too old to avoid it?

    .

  12. Yeah I agree. With my ScanGaugeII it uses something like 5-6 amps, so at 351 V, that's 2 kW.

The heater and fan will just blow your EV range away.

I'm actually not - at all. I work 1.5 miles away and it wouldn't even get warm by the time I get there - or back home. I might use the heat pump a little to help defog the inside of the windshield. But I do that very rarely. Nor do I use heated seats or the heated steering wheel. I think I might lose 15% or more by making so many multiple trips over 3-5 days worth. There is some zombie power loss if you don't use it all at once.

So just the fact that the ambient temperature is ridiculously low, the poor Prime's mileage takes a hit! That bites!
Yeah, we're plummeting here at night to 58° Fahrenheit from daytime temps in the high 70's. And we live in the same country!! And still no rain!

Right. It will get to the point where I won't even bother with EV. I'll hit Auto EV or HV and live with the ICE. That was figured into the purchase from the start.

Goes something like this for me: It is 1.5 miles to work. The drive is 4 or 5 minutes long in good weather. In deep winter, just a few weeks away, it might take 15 minutes to de-ice the front and back windshield with both real capacitive buttons turned on, and the heat for interior on as well. Then another 10-12 minutes at work for the return trip home. The commute is nothing compared to dealing with the weather. Not to mention using the ice scraper and snowbrush while the car is de-icing and defrosting the glass F & R. Just doesn't make sense to rely on EV when dealing with all that crap.

Like I mentioned in another thread somewhere, the Prime is a 8 to 9 month a year EV for me, for local driving. The old Gen3 I'd average about 23 MPG in the winter for my short commute. Just the fun of living in Chicago.

well, I'm only 2.7 miles away from work, you got me beat. I just wear a heavy coat, and if the frost on the windshield is extremely aggravating I use the front defroster and suffer a MPG hit to work. doesn't happen very often fortunately.

Okay....what am I doing wrong. The most I was able to get from the get go was 30 miles on a charge. This past month I noticed that the most I'm getting is 25. Have no idea why the change except the weather here is starting to get colder but not that cold that it would affect the difference. I live in the southern part of NJ and the terrrain isn't hilly, most flat. My car is garaged and I'm using the same AC/Heat as before, so nothing changed there either. Anybody have any idea what's gong on? Appreciate any advice.

I think weather (temperature) is the biggest draw, but the little things can add up.

Have you been having rain? Wet roads take a little more energy, also the wipers.

Driving more in the dark with lights on? LEDs are efficient, but take a little power.

Colder weather might lower tire pressure a little.

    Other ideas?

On the inside? In that case, it's self-inflicted. You must either use the heater or open the window to prevent that. With such a short drive, live it up by taking advantage of the electric-heat.

like I said "if the frost on the windshield is extremely aggravating" Since I'm wearing a winter coat I will open all four windows, yup I'm pretty stubborn :p Electric heat? the front defroster is using ICE heat. Edit: to clarify, since I have the Advanced Model Prime, I will take advantage of remote climate and set climate to MAX and both defrosters on before I go to work. That usually takes care of the frost issue, both inside and out while I'm travelling the 2.7 miles to work.
