towards the evening my car is actually in the shade at work, tonight when i left the office ~6pm it was 73 ... not arguing the benefits of sunshades, but the hassle with them ... i haven't used any in many years ... if it were hotter where i park for the majority of time, yea, maybe ...

Yeah, the cabin (thermostat) temperature is only half the story; the rest is the outdoor temperature - highs of about 100 recently here in Austin...

By the way, I tried it on a full charge: 31.some-odd with AC on or off. Hmmm...

i had a couple cars that i got tinted, somewhere 10 or so years ago when i lived in NorCal (Sac area), i really liked them in the summer but hated the lack of visibility to the rear esp during the winter time, maybe that has improved over the years??

I take the suggestion back. A ventilated car in the shade is the best one can hope for.

Probably. The newer ceramic tints are quite the thing. But not cheap.

That's what I got on my Prime. 35% ceramic tint on all sides and rear. I got 18% ceramic for the top of the windshield. I also use a sunshade. I am looking at getting window visors for the door windows so I can crack the windows open to help vent without rain getting in.

The window visors sounds like an excellent idea. I wonder though how much benefit you get from the sunshade since the tint reflects back into the sunshade. I don't think it can hurt, I just wonder how much benefit.

I got a few quotes here in NorCal bay area for ceramic tint, all between $550-700 depending on the brand. They all said the rear window is hard to do and would cost more.

I can personally feel the sunshade blocks alot of heat just in the short period of time I put the shade up and I'm in the car. I don't think there is much an effect with the tint and the shade. The tint is only like 6" at the top of the windshield.

In South Carolina, I paid $260 for the sides and front and $60 for the windshield. It is the Suntek brand tint.

I actually saw another Prius Prime Adv with SolarGard UP ceramic tint covering the entire front windshield and was pretty good and am thinking to get it too.

I am sticking with the local tint laws and I can't tint below the tint line on the windshield. Even if I get away with it myself, it would be hard to sell to someone else if I was to sell the car to someone else.

the one I saw was close to clear, I actually couldn't tell it was tinted. Although, it looked a bit greenish.

Which one ? I'm sorely tempted to tint the front windshield for 44% heat block and only 20% visible light reduction.

3M Crystalline is way too expensive but performs very well.

Ah, that's interesting: Here in Texas, you're not legally allowed to tint the windshield.

I think we also got SunTek, specifically CXP, medium tint, all but the windshield, for around $400.

Again, I think it was SunTek CXP, whomever it was had especially good IR absorbion characteristics: In other words, although it's (mostly) transparent to visible light, it's mostly opaque to infrared light (and to UV, of course).

In short, it does seem to be doing a pretty good job.

Only the top 6" or so can be tinted. Basically no further down than your sunvisor can go.

Around here AC is almost more needed as a dehumidifier than for the cooling affect. With mild respiratory issues (including annoying allergies) I am willing to sacrifice EV range to be comfortable. Although with the weather up around the 80s this last week, I am still hitting about 34 mile EV per charge. Given I was perfectly happy with the thought of getting about 25 when I bought the car, who am I to complain :D.

Coming very late to this but I will say this car does horrible in the rain as far as mileage. In my trip out to Chicago, the way out I got over 60 MPG after EV, but on the way back I got only about 50 MPG after EV. I had the same experience in our Camry Hybrid. If it was dry for long trips I could easily get it up to 40 MPG (rated at 34), but if it was raining I would languish down around 30 MPG. That said, 50MPG is nothing to whine about when your previous road trip car got 16 (although it could hold a ton more stuff being a truck and all).
