Any ideas about how to remove this axle-nut?

    again making things more complicated, just wedge a screwdriver into one of the rotor slots and use the caliper bracket as the stopper.

    Or before removing the wheels loosen the axle nut first (way more simple). Parking brake set and wheel chocks to make the car sit still.

    Easy peasy..
    Investing in an impact gun will save you time and effort if you're into DIY.

    To get the drive axle out you've pretty much got the hub undone just undo the three fasteners on the lower control arm ball joint and pull the whole hub off and away from the car now you can flip it over blast the 414s out flip it back over smack on it once or twice and flip it over in the bearing and hub just fall right out of the aluminum assembly and put your new business all in there hang the hub put all your fasteners back on and pretty much that's it much easier to have the aluminum hub sitting on the ground then trying to get your gun and all in behind all your other pieces but whatever you think is best

    Its kinda worse than it looks. Let me breakdown the situation...

    Initially it was just the threaded axle-nut area...HOWEVER

    1. The 2007 Prius is a PARTS CAR (wrecked in an accident; car is in my backyard)

    2. What I'd like to do is remove the entire knuckle with the bearing inside it and then transfer it over to my other 2007 Prius which has a bad bearing

    3. I removed the knuckle from the top and the bottom so NOW the bearing assembly is hanging loose.

    4. I CANT FIGURE OUT HOW TO STABILIZE IT!

    5. It seems easier than it looks to stabilize it but with the minimal tools I have I can't figure out how to keep it steady to even THINK about the axle-nut issue. I figure once I do that I might be able to A) heat it up with propane or 2) force the axle-nut off

    TL;DR: everytime I try to remove the axle-nut the bearing assembly moves and wont hold steady.

    btw: yeah...I do wish I left the tire on and tried to remove the axle-nut first before removing the knuckle ..but basically impossible to align it now with a that pump jack and two scissor jacks (ground not level + can't get the height)

    Wow, that is an eye opener. How about: get a sheet of plywood under the floor jack, get it's cradle under "something" substantial and stable, raise the corner enough to partially reassemble things, and then get back to the spindle nut.

    The bottom of that shock looks at tempting jacking point, but it may kick out.

    Make sure the parking brake is on solidly, and chock the diagonally opposite corner as well.

    SUCCESS!

    1. stair-stepped the front of the car up to the height necessary to put the wheel on

    2. Shouldn't have made a big deal of the trying to get that axle-nut off. Basically ANY force will take off. The indentation in the nut just popped out. Its seems like its rather soft metal.

    3. NOW...the issue is taking off the axle. The axle-end needs to pushed in so I can removed the entire knuckle.

    I DO NOT HAVE A HAMMER. I lent mine to someone and never got it back. Should I go out and buy one? I tried using a wooden plank to push the axle back into the bearing assembly but it didnt work.

    Yeah, get several, assorted sizes. I think they suggest to put the nut on loose too, to protect the end of the axle when tapping, more-or-less flush with end of axle. You can also put the socket on the nut, tap the back of the socket.

    the thing is i don't have a completely safe car to drive at the moment. The wheel bearing in the usable Prius is really bad and sounds like its going to break. so instead of using a hammer i used a vise. I don't have many tools but trying to make do with what I have.

    OK. So now how do I proceed? I want to remove this entire thing and move it over to the other Prius. Here is the fastener. I've never removed one of these before but I assume I pull the cotter-pin out with pliers and then use a 14mm? to loosen this.

    EDIT: Took out the cotter-pin but it seems the 17mm socket keeps slipping as the only place for it to hold is the bottom of this? HOW do you get this tie-rod separated without stripping the nut??

    Then I will have the entire assembly in hand and I can leave the wrecked car be. I just want the knuckle/bearing assembly.

    for the axle I used a 12pt. However right now the VERY LAST thing is getting this tie-rod off so I can take the bearing assembly/knuckle.

    I can't find any real method to get this off. I've tried but it is almost stripped so I'm going to try different means.

    I looked at the (very similar) nut on our 3rd gen, and the castle style protrusions (above the pin) are 17mm as well. That said, in your case it looks like corners were knocked off or rounded some. Maybe not the first time it's been off.

    maybe youre correct. I never felt like a tight fit. that's why I went so crazy on it. gonna buy a nut-splitter and knock it off. I won't need it since the other car will also have the nut.

    urgency. Not having a car = desperate.

    I was hoping to get more eyeballs to get this tie-rod nut off. thing is I don't have transportation so I kinda have to bike to anyplace I'm going to get parts. I hate biking. One time I had a bad battery and rode my bike like 5 miles to buy a new battery. I balanced the 30lb battery on my handlebars all the way home....it sucked. gonna bike to the store to get a nut-splitter tomorrow morning, should be much easier.

    I think I might just take the hub-assembly to a shop tomorrow and let them put the part in for me if its reasonable. Apparently the assembly needs to be put back together in a torque specified manner. I don't have a torque-wrench as well.

    Easy to be a little reckless removing parts from a wrecked car, but maybe I should be more prudent in the Prius I actually have to depend on. I don't want to risk messing this up and maybe I'll learn something about how to remove & install the hub-assembly on the other side when I need to.

    The no personal-transportation issue is kinda like your health. You take it for granted and then suddenly when you are sick or hurt, you become a desperate internet-sleuth trying to find any answer from anywhere on how to get healthy.

    one big lesson I've learned is to remove all the parts i might need from the wrecked car while the weather is nice. I'm going to remove the OTHER wheel hub-assembly and the water pump and various items since the weather in the Midwest is a beautiful 70 degrees & sunny. Much better than having to remove parts when it's ZERO degrees out in January.

    Yeah and break loose any big bolts while everything’s still on the car, as much as possible.

    I got this corded impact for little more than $100 CDN. No variable speed, bit of a handful, but it’s helped me a lot.
