If Tesla is going to be Apple (perhaps without the slave-labor work force, offshoring, and bullet-resistant reliability)

...then SOMEBODY has to play Android and Microsoft in this repeat performance.
If past is prologue, then that niche will get filled rather quickly.

    Me?
    I'm waiting for a Driod.

History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes a lot.
Somebody's gonna build an e-car for the 99-percenters.....

maybe, but not until it is cost effective. that gives tesla enough time to arrive there first, with way more staying power than they currently have

The reason for possibly not counting them was that in ~1980 HP was only a minor player in computers, selling a few mini computers.
They sold, at the time, mostly things like industrial electronics, calculators, medical electronics, etc. They weren't even in the top 10 of computer makers IIRC...so they didn't have a big computer business to protect.

I've never been a fan, but one does have to admit that their innovation, build quality, design, and materials are above grade.
I've driven three of their phones and one of their tablets professionally and if money were no object in my life.....well....I still can't live in their walled-in little garden, but I do give the devil their due.

They build good stuff, and (unlike Tesla) Apple has a butt-ton of time, talent, money, and supply chain influence to throw at overcoming any short term PR and reliability troubles.
    They've navigated these shoals before.

    Like I said.....
SOMEBODY is going to make a $200 phone that is about as good as one of the $1,000 flagships.

I'll be there with my ink pen when it happens.

    ....or?
Maybe a year or two after that.
    ;)

vw email leaked: 'volkswagon's ceo herbert diess says the company needs a catch up plan'.

maybe they need a ketchup plan, or a catsup plan.

'diess admitted, he finds tesla so vexing, it gives him headaches'

maybe it's actually the diesel fumes

I've used Droid phones for the last 3 personal purchasing cycles. When I went to look this last time, my major carrier had an offer in Walmart that costs me ~$8 a month for 18 months for a name brand phone whose only downside was it did not have a user replaceable battery. It was much larger and much more capable in every spec than the phone I had been using. Transition to the new phone took 5 minutes max. I lost no functionality. It was at a price point I could buy into on a whim. (Seemed odd I could not buy it for cash but had to put it on time but what the heck.) It surely isn't the best in a comparison to its $1k brand mates. But it does what I need. And shows 85% state of charge at the end of a typical day's use.

I see no reason to buy an overpriced phone. I don't buy grossly overpriced cars either.

Tesla is not apple. Its Chinese part is not run I by foxconn, and musk is very different than jobs, though both are great ceos. I don't think tesla has anything proprietary that could not be copied or done similar by a competitor. What tesla does have is a moat. It is quite expensive to develop an electric car company or line. Those that have the money and expertise don't seem to really execute well or want to do so. I hope vw improves and they certainly can. BYD and other chinese makers seem to be doing well. BMW and mercedes seem to be able to make luxury phevs. Toyota seems to have a good idea in the rav4 prime phev. Gas prices are down which means full hybrid sales will be down. EV - phevs and bevs - I expect to rapidly gain market share as gas only cars decline in sales in the next decade. Year to year is uncertain, but I expect a really bad next 9 months for automakers. Tesla likely will be an exception especially if it can get the y into faster production.

Use http://plugshare.com/ and set the filter for Electrify America. IMHO, it looks 'sparse' with three, possibly four, partial routes.

I ask because supposedly HWY10/39/29 were supposed to be electrified in 2019 (date kept moving forward now appears to be TBA) :(

I was planning on a short range EV with quick charge until the title+registration became $666

Good thing they raised title fees or I might be trying to unload another city only car.

The Compaq merger sure caused a dent in HP quality (imo) for quite a while.
