Ah you said "somebody stop me" now the CA legislature may stop you: may make the deal a little less attractive if green stickers are expanded?

Except this time around there are more choices to get carpool stickers thanks to the infinite supply of white stickers, so I don't think the premiums for green stickers will be as high before for the yellow ones.

not entirely; even without the 3k bonus, i would be looking at a <6k loss, so effective monthly payments of $160/mo. not bad for a car that was called as "too expensive" and "not worth the markup" by plenty of people.
if values jump up by 3k, I'm looking at a total loss in value of under 3k over 3 years. you're right, that's not really profit, but driving a PHV for effectively $80/month is pretty ridiculous.
if that was the case no one would buy PHVs. the reality is that electrics are not for everyone – not necessarily objectively, but certainly subjectively in people's minds.

It depends on where prices settle. Some people were able to get the base pips for ~$24k OTD after rebates/tax credits last year ($6500 factory rebate), so they might actual be able to sell at or really close to the price they paid.

Today my wife and I were driving in the 237 HOV lane. We were talking about proposal to increase the number of green decals, and I was warning my wife to look out for bozos who cut across the double white stripe, when suddenly a pearl white PiP with green decals cut across the double white stripes right in front of us. How embarrassing. :(

Priuses have their share of people who struggle with the driving task.

I drive my PIP about 30,000 miles a year...when my green sticker expires, I expect to have 135k miles on it...about half used up...I hope I will be able to sell if for the 24K I paid :)

I was just kidding...though I do expect to get at least 250K on my vehicle before getting rid of it.

I have always sold my cars for under 2000 used...

    Not so.

31% of CA PiP buyers cite HOV as primary motivation for purchase, compared to only 18% of Volt buyers, according to the Center for Sustainable Energy's ongoing study. For both vehicles, the leading motive was saving money on fuel costs, followed - for the Volt - by environmental impact.

Losing the stickers might hurt PiP sales, but not as much as discontinuing it. :) But it won't turn the Volt 2 into a flop.

....you can say that, as long as you got green HOV stickers, we cannot see the impact.
Somehwere around 80-85% of Plug_in owners have the white and green stickers right?
So you are saying most of those folks say that was not the reason however.

They were saying in a survey that that was not the biggest primary reason. Certainly they were an incentive, along with rebates, Federal tax credits, fuel cost savings and being environmental.

What I'm saying is that the stickers were not "pretty much single-handedly a main reason for Plug-in sales," and would not make the "Volt2 flop." They did and would, however, have more of an effect on PiP sales than Volt sales.

I love driving in electric mode, both with my PiP and LEAF, but realistically I would have not purchased either had it not been for the stickers.

i wish that tool would let you filter the data by date of purchase. i suspect later PiP sales were driven more by sticker privileges than the early adopters.

but saving money on fuel costs? people need to learn math again.

The pip is ~10% more fuel efficient on the highway, which translates to ~$1000+ less spent per 100k highway miles (assuming $2.50/gallon). That's not a huge amount, but still substantial. EV versus HEV amounts to another ~$1000 per 25k miles assuming you get decent electricity rates.
