Another Battery Degradation Thread

    Bilbo - 15.3 EV est is extremely high considering you're in Maine and its still been fairly cool down here in Boston.
    Are you messing with the EV button like some - using gas on the uphills or freeway / EV rest of the way ?

    as for range deterioration I should have a better handle on that within a month. I'm charging 4-5x a day and my daily drives are very consistent so all I need is comparable weather and its been a Norman Bates spring...

    If there's been any slippage so far its miniscule because when we did get a stretch of 70 degrees I was able to hit 15 all EV miles just like old times. I was hitting 16 on a regular basis when it was hot last summer

    I bought mine with 20 miles on it 9 days ago. It now has 270 of the car and every time I charge it I'm always getting 11.6 on the read out. What is optimal weather that will get me 15? Right now my weather is mid 50's at night and mid 70's or so during the day. I get the 11.6 wewther I charge at night or day right now.

    70's is probably optimal. but that doesn't mean your guess o meter is going to go up. i can drive 17 miles on flat roads at 20 mph and get 18 miles, but it will be less at higher speeds, hills and stop and go. you won't know what your max is until you reach it. many don't get more than 10 or 11.

    It depends on where you live (flat terrain or hilly) the speed you're traveling while in EV. For me I live in an area where the terrain is flat, I travel to work going a maximum of 40 MPH which gives me about 11.0 miles EV in the summer. If I drive down the side streets going less than 25 MPH I can get 15 miles EV.:D

    Even air temps need to be taken into account to do an exact match. That said, I have YET to hear of any one simply using a kWh meter, and measuring how much charge they take, compared to how much they did when new. That way one isn't left with conjecture, and/or, 'I think I'm experiencing battery degradation'.

    With that route being part of my daily commute, the sampling is plenty large to factor out the smaller variances.

    The point is looking to see if there's anything noticable, tests with results that fall short repeatedly.

    So far (2 full years of driving), nothing has stood out.

    does Chargepoint count ?
    I've been monitoring that since my PiP was 2-3 months old

    I meant the 11.6 is what my readout says after a full charge. Who knows what I'm really getting miles wise from it. I know I'm close to 11 or so from it. Just wondering when I et to my car if it will ever read 15 after a full charge.

    I don't think anyone with a 2012 PiP will see any degradation unless they live in Palm Springs or the high desert/Riverside/San Bernadino area.

    Charging in extreme heat can cause problems. Not sure if you noticed on hot days, when you plug in the car, cooling fans start to rotate on high speed near the back seats.

    Hope that I won't really see any degradation until around year 5 or 6.

    I"m curious why the amount of energy consumed from the wall to bring the battery from empty to full is not used. I know 'empty' is not, but there is a well defined starting point, isn't there ?

    I agree with Hill,

    Does the PIP not show may many kWh were used during a trip or since full charge? I had one for 20k miles but can't remember. My Volt shows this information so it's easy to see if I'm losing capacity. IMO it's the only reliable way to know. You simply cannot make such an assessment based on number of miles driven.

    You would also have to account for losses suffered on very hot days when the cooling system is using energy to cool the battery. I would expect more energy used when charging in 100F temps than when charging in 70F temps.

    One thing to be mindful of in the PIP as people start to take long summer vacation trips..
    Remember to keep the rear seat battery vent clear from the kid's pillows, blankets, beach towels, etc... as blocking the battery air inlet vent could really cause some damage.

    42K, I wish I had a daily route that would allow me to super charge that way, but it is relatively flat along the coast here. Temperatures have certainly been cool, and will remain so for several more days here. In spite of this I'm still charging over 15 miles each night. Yesterday morning I was amazed to see 16.4 after a night in the mid-50s. Last night was colder but this morning's charge was still 15.4. Eventually we'll see more summer-like weather in New England and I hope it will be reflected in the daily EV charge, both yours and mine!

    I love to obsess about tiny details; half a percent here, quarter percent there, and this forum, this car is perfect for those of us who are so inclined, but for me, there is a limit to how much anxiety I'll allow myself, but I do love to fiddle. The Prius is a masterpiece of small tweaks, all coming together to provide the best performing hybrid on the market today.

    Wow I wish I saw the 15 mark, 16 is great! I saw 11.8 yesterday and that's the most I've seen so far. I only have 330 miles on the car. Hopefully it will get better!
