That is a never ending hole that the legal system is not suited to handle well.
Just think about it for a minute or two Big Tech Lawyers, their firms and the DOJ.

I can imagine the pickle. Confusion would be the order of the day while having a systematically integrated version of Android Auto in
( Android 10 ) Android Q name: What could it be?
as well as an Assistant version installable / uninstallable version available for older cars without Android Auto (heads) for the phones to connect to. Confusion both in development (1) as well as end user experience.
(1) basically how to make the headless version for older cars play nice with the system integrated new version,, without tons of initial (bugs / features) which is a sticky point in most all newer complex applications, in the first place.

 

It isn't a pickle for the car manufacturers, though. They just need to put an Android Auto compatible head unit in their cars. Or not, which could lead to their Android phone using customers getting into this pickle. Which exists because Google decided to no longer have Android Auto work as a stand alone app, and the replacement for people without an Android Auto compatible car/head unit wasn't ready.

Full disclosure, I never had a car with Android Auto, so it never occurred to me that I could run the app just on my phone. What does it do that is better than using Google maps separately, car's bluetooth for calls, and the bluetooth/cable for music?

The base Spark already supports Android Auto and CarPlay. This announcement is about something different. GM cars are going to have Google assistant, maps, and other apps built in. People won't have to connect their phone to use them.

 

who knows how much android auto UI can be modified/customized , but the thing that seems most odd is how the UI magnifies the images like it's for a sight impaired person - rather than having typically smaller fonts & a more zoomed out map detail & such. Like way too much software now days, it's still looking like a work in progress. iirc, it also wanted additional Android software downloaded that you might not want. Speech to text comes to mind.

 

Same thing I've been saying all along, the car-centric version will take time to become available. Effort to fullly integrate using a native format/hardware, rather than a mirror of phone-centric, has just begun.

 

Well, it is for a car. Perhaps the developer didn't want the driver taking too much time trying to view the screen.
A common complaint in those threads you posted earlier was that Android Auto limited some of the phone's functions. It didn't seem to occur to them that its purpose was to make doing phone things, like navigation and music, you may need while driving easier, and thus safer, to access, and not turn your car's display into a full function phone. Being on a bigger screen doesn't make doing phone things that shouldn't be done at all while driving, okay to do.

 

But how does that justify Toyota not offering Android Auto for so long?

 

But people weren't asking Toyota for Android or iPhone OS to run their car infotainment system when they were asking for Android Auto and CarPlay. They just wanted to use their phone through the car's touchscreen.

It taking a couple of years for GM cars to get a built in Google Smart Speaker(plus Maps) in no way explains why Toyota waited five years to support Android Auto.

 

I think the reason is simple. Toyota wanted to control the navigation and all aspects, but did not have systems nearly as good. I don't understand why people are upset that android auto doesn't work well on the system, they don't need to use it. On some rental cars car play seems to make my phone very hot, but it is nice being able to use my phone on the system.

I'd like my tesla to have carplay, but it is a very good system, so not many complaints. Biggest complaints seem to be lack of spotify support in the US (there is a 3rd party app) and waze.

I don't think we should be asking why toyota took so long, I'm just glad they are supporting these things now.

 

I don't care why it took them so long. It isn't their actions for why I commented. They aren't trying to conflate Android Auto with something completely different as an after the fact excuse.
