The nearest Kia service center to my house is 4 miles. The nearest Tesla is 9 miles and it just opened. Before that it was 19 miles.

CCS charging is expanding so rapidly in the US that it has eclipsed Superchargers in most locations already.

Some people might prefer a couple dozen charger stalls not spread so densely &w/better pricing, as opposed to one-zee two-zee's / at a rip-off price per kWh.

The EV6 is my current top choice for a second vehicle. Here's why:

A little lower and slightly shorter wheelbase than Ionic5 - slightly more car-like, and 10% more rated range, likely due to decreased frontal area.
~$15-25k less than a Model Y (depending on both options and credits).
Dash included (beats Model Y).
HUD available (beats Model Y).
Frunk included (beats BZ4x).
528km range on WLTP (beats Model Y, Ioniq 5 and BZ4x).
2WD option is RWD (beats BZ4x).
I like the look better than the Ioniq 5.

 

I'd rather be able to charge than get a tow after being stranded by the side of the road.

 

Maybe use it to tow your Gasser - as the gas would be much less costly to drive, than .43¢/kwh. Even 31¢ for that matter.

In reality, it comes down to choosing from what is available when you buy. With a 16 month backlog, Tesla sells every car they make. Choosing something else won't have much of an effect. It isn't as if the dealer lots are full of unsold EVs ... except perhaps the compliance versions.

Considering that there is one Rav4 plug-in available in the entire SET region, availability of any EV variant is a reasonable concern. My son had to go outside the region to find his Prius Prime. The SE is just not a priority marketing area for even plug-ins.

So even assuming KIA will include the SE, then how long before they have anyone trained in their EV technology? I already have a price for the necessary home wiring for a charger so 80-90% of my charging would be taken care of there.

So the prerequisites for me to consider it are pretty reasonable to me and it would probably be a year before I'd be comfortable.

 

I just looked at your area on Google maps. I see that Sanford NC is 40 miles from the nearest Tesla service center and there are only two service centers showing up in NC. I can see why you have those requirements for establishing the validity of a car manufacturer. Tesla barely meets the standard where you live.

Good news for your future: There are 15 Kia dealerships within 50 miles of Sanford.

 

Southeast Toyota is not part of Toyota corporation, and makes their own decisions on what models to order for dealers. They have an anti-plug bias.

kia doesn't have such concerns, but like nearly everyone else will have limited EVs available do to battery supply. They'll ship to CARB/ZEV states first.

 

once folks have tasted a new car purchase without having to go through a Steelership, you never look back ... whether there are 15, or 1500 stealerships nearby.

In town, I'll charge at home 100% of the time. No reason to ever do anything else unless I'm on a road trip, and one of the places I want to go is now and will for the foreseeable future be inaccessible via Superchargers. CCS charging will soon be available there however, and the saved $15k-25k over a Model Y will pay for a lot of road trips.

 

I ordered my Prime online. Royal PIA. Never again.

I never visited a dealership, before, during or after purchase, the car was delivered directly to my home, and I ordered it from my house online.

And that was a royal pain.

 

My understanding is the delivery backlog for Model Y is 16 months.
