A small bump caused a misalignment of the active air shutter frame on my 2016 which resulted in the blade not opening completely but it would close as designed. This alone was enough to trip the check engine light and set a trouble code. There are many sensor inputs into the ECU from the active air shutters and it was difficult to find the source of the problem. The dealer wanted to replace the whole assembly but after several discussions I told them that I wanted the Technician to show me exactly what was happening. After he and I took a closer look at it he was able to simply realign the shutter frame and the problem was solved and an $1100 parts bill was avoided. It seems that no dealer wants to do any actual troubleshooting if they can avoid it and just replace parts until the problem goes away. The active air shutter helps the engine warm more quickly and also reduces drag to increase mileage. It is a generation 4 addition I believe. There is no way to bypass the inputs into the check engine light controls.
The active grill shutter on my 2016 malfunctioned, and gave me the error code visit dealer message on my display screen. It was replaced under the emissions warranty, and so far it’s working. I wonder if the parts were replaced with identical, or if the assembly was redesigned?
