Aftermarket floor mats vs oem

Just like the WeatherTech cargo liner I had for the 2011 Prius I previously owned, for the 2016 Prius the WeatherTech cargo liner does not cover the rear seatbacks. The Toyota Cargo Tray Plus does, for about the same price (see the PriusChat Shop, no shipping charge).

When I got my new Prius at the beginning of March, I wanted SOMETHING to protect it (see dog at left). I was all set to buy WeatherTech but they didn't know when they would get moving and produce mats for it. It seemed silly to have my car get filthy while I waited for WeatherTech. So I got the Toyota Cargo Tray Plus and the rubber Weatherproof Floor Mats and am happy with them. If I had it to do over, I would get the Toyota ones anyway. I had the WeatherTech ones in my Gen 3 and was happy with them, but the Toyota ones do the job and are a lot cheaper.

@DustBunny: it sounds like you got the correct Cargo Tray Plus. As discussed elsewhere on this forum, the set for Prius models without a spare does not have two pieces to cover the vertical bits of carpeting because (1) they would scrape against the other pieces as you raise and lower the seatbacks and (2) being vertical, things tend not to fall on them. Covers for the rear seatbacks have to be split because the rear seats are split and so go up and down independently.

 

Does anyone have any recommendations for all-weather floormats? I like weathertech but am looking for something a little cheaper.

 

I got the Toyota OEM ones from Amazon. Be sure you get the correct cargo mat. You need the one for no spare tire.

I took the two extra HD Weathertech cargo mats I've used in my 3/4 ton Suburban (to extend the floor coverage over the carpeting when the 3 rd row seat was removed) and installed them over top of the Toyota weather mats that the new Prius 3 touring came with. Fits perfectly on both the driver's and passenger's side. I'll leave them in place for use during the upcoming holiday trip to New Hampshire~

 

Remove them before any service inspection at the dealer. If they follow Toyota’s checklist it will fail. The double mats on the driver’s side are considered a safety hazard. I am sure you saw the tag on the OEM mat.

 

I was lucky and found the front set on Amazon for $97.88 shipped. Be careful with Amazon as the price jumps around when you save an item to your wish list. After installing them in my car, I'm glad that I went with Weathertech as it provided much more coverage then the OEM mats. For the Cargo area, the OEM provides better coverage and was cheaper.

 

Thanks..I'll just take out the original OEM before then..as the Weathertech mats are better for my purpose.
