So you basically stole the OEM cat yourself before someone else did. I don't understand the economic benefit of realizing a loss that hasn't happened yet. Is the thinking that it will be more expensive to replace at a later date if and when it's stolen?

 

What is this technology that Toyota hasn't yet discovered that allows the aftermarket one to be as effective as the OEM one at a cost that is more than $1000 less? I suspect they aren't as effective. I'd be interested to see the measured emissions from an OEM vs. aftermarket.

But, here's the deal. Who cares? The car is a sitting duck target. It's not IF, it's WHEN the catalytic converter gets stolen.

For those of us who live outside of Unicorn land rules, it makes no sense to wait for someone to steal it. Remove it yourself while you can and install an aftermarket model. Do you come out ahead $$? Absolutely. Do you prevent a potentially expensive repair? Absolutely. Mr Thief is none too gentle, cutting the pipes and usually ripping the wires out for the O2 sensor, which can short and cause further electrical failures.

The aftermarket models meet EPA regs. They have 5 year warranties. They are a direct fit. Tens of thousands of miles after installation and still no P0420 Catalytic Converter efficiency DTCs on any of the cars in which I've performed the swap. I did have a thief steal an aftermarket cat from one car, but obviously that's because the thief was more stupid than most, I suppose.

 

People who drive Priuses because they're trying to reduce their emissions.

If you live where it's a 100% certainty that your catalytic converter will be stolen and you haven't moved yet, it might be you who is living in the land of unicorn land rules.

I've been driving for 30 years and I've never had a catalytic converter stolen, nor have I even known anyone who has. Does it happen? Of course. Is it statistically likely for me? Nope.

 

I have owned a 2012 Prius Plugin for 9 years, and it's been parked on the street the whole time. No problems. I also have a Prius C parked on the street since 2013. No cat stolen.

I need to move, but not because of catalytic converter theft. I've never even heard of it happening to anyone I know. It's difficult to make the case that something is so prevalent as to be a certainty when it's never happened to you or anyone you know.

 

I think your research clearly showed that the engine at low RPMs runs just as clean with an aftermarket cat. I think it's also safe to assume that at higher RPMs under load, like climbing mountains on a freeway that the aftermarket cat will pollute more than an OEM cat. And while we don't have the equipment to prove this, it's a reasonable assumption. It's also the lone reason I keep buying aftermarket cats and they're ending up on other people's cars rather than mine. As in I'd rather pollute with my car as little as possible. Of course if my cat gets jacked, I'll be really sad. Hopefully I'll replace and get the cash from it before that happens.

 

And I've been driving for almost 40 years. And Billy Joe Jim Bob has been driving for 50 years. And so on and so on. That doesn't mean crap. And if you live in LA and don't know anyone with a Gen 2 Prius that has had a converter stolen, then you must be a hermit, or you just don't know anyone with a Gen 2.

This has been an issue that has been getting worse and worse over the last 2-3 years and is an absolute current disaster. FYI, CALIFORNIA is one of the worst hit. Wake up and read the news now and then. Here's a simple search for you.....
