I probably have the largest current drawing amplifier in this forum and I have not had any problems to date. I do wonder about the fuel economy though but that is for another thread. My only issues are the various rattles in the rear of the car. With the 2 12's it vibrated bad but when I switched to the 2 10's it rattled less but had nearly the same volume so I never got any further in my quest to kill rattles. Someday i need to buy those stupid plastic clips so I can put the rear plastic trim pieces back on the car.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(F8L @ Aug 11 2007, 07:49 PM) </div> I am pondering the effect my sound system is having on mileage. I have 20,000 miles on my car - so it is broken in. I have yet to crack 50 MPG for a 5 minute bar on the consumption chart. I have raised the pressure in the tires, driven less than 70 on the highway - yet I top out at 45 MPG. I would like to check the wiring - since I do have a ground noise in the system. Almost a sci-fi sound that correlates to turn signals, doors being opened - any use of electric. But I don't have time to even listen to it.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Actual Mileage @ Aug 13 2007, 03:08 PM) </div> The "easiest" way to figure it out is to disconnect the power wire from the battery to your amp then remove the speaker box and drive for a few tanks on the same roads and measuring weather conditions and tire pressure. Then plug it all back in and repeat the process. I never really got around to trying it out because once I did the math it simply wasn't worth it to me to ditch my sound system only to save $100 over 10k miles or more. lol
i agree with saying that most self-powered units sound like absolute crap. however, my Alpine PLV-7 takes up the same footprint of 2 JL 8w3's and if you wanna disturb the neighbors you still can. It has a digitally regulated PDX amp rated at 500W in it, so it thumps really well and has speaker level inputs and a remote bass knob too. just my 2 cents
