Actual MPGs - Anyone Filled Up, Calculated?

    Ok, that seems right.

    You said you turned on the HV mode before the freeway entrance.The 10 seconds is before or during you accelerated and merged onto the freeway? Since you said you were going about 35mph, it is probably before.

    The excess power may even gets split and charge the battery. Do you recall seeing an arrow from ICE to the battery?

    You reported the HV mileage was 30 MPG after 4 more miles. That would definitely include the freeway merging right?

    Try the engine warm up in the blended mode. It'll be interesting to see if that consumes less gas for you. Don't forget to compare the EV miles left as well.

    My first fill-up was at 481 miles, took 8.52 gallons (when the pump first shutoff) for a calculated MPG of 56.45. The car indicated I was getting 57. I squeezed a little bit more in after that, which lowered the calculated MPG to 55 (8.72 gallons). I was charging every night at home, but didn't always charge at work.

    My first tank would have been higher if I hadn't been playing with the various modes (EV versus HV, etc) all week. As an example, yesterday I deliberately put the car into HV mode for my commute to work. I started out with 11.1 miles of EV range and got to work with roughly the same amount. According to the car, my MPG for that trip was 47. With the 2005 Prius it would've been around 44 MPG. When in the in the default EV mode, my MPG is between 63 and 67.

    This commute is a mixture of surface streets and highway. The first 8 miles are surface streets with a speed of about 40 to 50 MPH. The next 35 miles are all freeway with speeds ranging from 60 to 75 MPH. The last 3 miles are around 30 to 45 MPH. There are various elevation changes along the way.

    Finally filled up at home, with 3 bars left on the fuel gauge.
    Put in 6.993 gallons and ran 488.8 miles, for a calculated mpg of 69.898. The hybrid system says I was getting 71mpg for the tank.

    Most days I can charge at least once, and have been able to charge while out twice. My trips look like a spirograph; most are beyond EV range, but some are within EV.

    This tank also includes about 160 miles on the trip home last weekend on the interstate at 70 mph, so as not to get flipped off, run over or shot at.

    Anyway, Fuelly registered on the second fillup.

    Looking forward to tweaking the mpg's upwards this next tank.

    DrI, they have a listing for PiP in add vehicle. PiP not yet shown in browse cars.... when was the last time you got gas? :) No denying, Volt can put up big MPGs.

    Good work. I found you on fuelly.com . I guess they're still looking for a way to log kWh, but it's good they put up option for plug-in to separate it from other Pri's.

    Thanks.

    To list the Plug-in Prius, Fuelly still has you choose the "my car is not listed" option and to write in manually a PiP or PHEV.

    I think when enough folks do that, the site moderators will inlcude the plug-in as a category for browsing.

    We did go out to dinner last night, and City of Woodstock has a single charging station directly in front of restaurant, so we had a gas-free round trip.

    I am getting around 53 mpg (first 600 miles), but my EV mode is limited to 11% - driving long distances. Waiting for my license plate and carpool stickers

    Actually, it's in the drop down menu as of yesterday when I registered my car.

    I'm not sure what you mean by category since I don't see such categories when I "Browse Vehicles". It lists them by make and model.

    I wish the Prius Plugin can do that. That would be awsome. Prius may get better CS MPG but the Volt's EV distance blows it out of the water. With this range, I know people can go years without filling up their tank. To keep the gas fresh, one may only have to put in a dollar's worth of gas every couple of weeks.

    Correction: BHC's 4KWh kit is Enginer kit. 10Kwh kit is Calcars based kit. A123 discontinues Hymontion kit for a while now due to high manufacturing cost and warranty cost.

    Please note that PiP only has usable capacity of 2.7kWh although their total battery capacity is rated at 4.4kWh while Enginer kit has usable capacity of 4kWh according to Enginer customers' report. If you travel over 30 miles per charge, a regular Prius with $3495 Enginer kit can easily beat PiP. Enginer kit discharges the Lithium battery in constant current mode well below factory maximum discharge current rating and is very good for longevity of the battery.

    I think many Volt owners like myself are happy for a successful PiP launch and sales as it is close enough in concept that it will spread the word about a "PHEVs" that first act like a BEV for x number of miles!

    Don't be disappointed in wide difference in the warm vs cooler weather EV range. Here in Chicagoland I've seen high 20's to low 50s. You'll certainly see a similar wide spread in your PiP.

    The screen below is from my 2011 Volt with the famous 2011 software update which happened in the Fall when range was dropping anyway and people were concerned about it. Sunday March it was 64F on my way to an event and I got 48.7 electric miles on the battery. No climate controls needed because of temp. 35-45 MPH with a lot of stoplight (which I don't think were good - stop/start acceleration kW usage)

    Notice that my ICE/gas_generator mileage was pretty good as well. 39.7miles / 0.79 gal of gas = 50MPGused. Yes, the ICE stopped/started multiple times.

    Note: The 2012s show kWh on this screen where "Total mi"les is located. My 2011 does not. It is up to 10.4 kWh (SOC 22%-87% so 65% of 16 kWh battery). They then moved Total miles just above the ball.

    Is there a screen showing kWh/mi usage?

    10.4kWh/48.7mi * 100 = 21.4 kWh/100 mi .. doesn't seem correct.

    No. It just shows total kwh and total EV miles, "this charge". You have to do the division yourself. The screen unfortunately resets every time you fully recharge; there is no cumulative function inside the car; that is only available on web site.

    It's correct but doesn't account for charging losses. With charging losses it's probably somewhere between 24.5-26.7 kwh/100 mi for that particular trip.

    The 2011's don't show it. But the 10.4 is the battery power, when measuring kWh/100mi the EPA uses power from the wall with is about 13 for the Volt, so Scott's drive was 26.9kWr/100miles. Frugal but reasonable. (I've had more than a dozen days over 50miles per charge, 3 of which were over 60). My best day was 17.3, my highest usage day was 44.5 (doing 100mph for much of it :)

    Ok, I filled up today. I modeled my own spreadsheet after ukr2's so here are the numbers:

    Total Miles: 793.6
    Pump Gallons: 9.095
    Calculated MPG: 87.26
    Displayed MPG: 89

    EV Driving Display

    Gallons: 8
    Gallons Saved: 7.9
    EV%: 54
    EV Miles: 433
    HV%: 46
    HV Miles: 359

    Calculated:

    EV Miles/kWh: 4.56
    EV kWh/100m: 21.94
    HV Calculated MPG: 39.47

    I played around with modes a bit this tank, mostly the PWR mode. It made for an easier transition from my last car. This is my first Prius, after all. Looking at my calculated HV MPG, I think I need some work there (although staying out of PWR mode should help quite a bit, I suppose).

    I entered my fill-up on Fuelly, but I guess it doesnt display until the 2nd fill-up.

    I entered my first "fill-up/fuel-up" on Fuelly with the odometer reading I saw before I started my test drive so I will get a fuel-up MPG when I really do fuel-up for the first time. The gallons field doesn't matter, since it is going to be discarded anyway, but I put the full capacity of the Prius Plug-in (10.6 gallons), since it started with a full tank of gas.
