Well, I think I'm having a hard time getting my point across, and in the spirit of all of us being Prii owners, I'm going to back out of this discussion.

I'm still hoping someone figures out how to install a turbo in these things!

I think, for the most part, most of the people on this thread understand/relate to your point. A car that gets this phenomenal gas mileage has a little get up and go in it. No, it won't win any 0-60 or quarter mile races, but if you need to get up to speed with some urgency, there is enough torque to do so (especially at lower speeds).

A lot of truck owners are fiercely proud of their trucks and attach the machismo to the vehicle (as evidenced by the proliferation of the "truck balls" that these owners will proudly place under their truck to show their power/virility....whatever. Nothing like getting humbled off the line by a "slow poke sissy car" like a Prius to humiliate them in front of their friends.

While it is true that many an opponent beaten in a race by a Prius didn't know they were racing....It's even better when the macho truck drivers are trying to beat a Prius and can't. It almost makes you want to have a "toy car" horn (to go beep beep) to mock them further. Maybe Toyota will offer a "playing card and clothes pin" mod to attach to the tires to make the car sound faster (like we did with our bikes back in the day.....)

Thanks Codyroo, I think you expressed my point exactly how I meant it. I appreciate it :)

PS, wouldn't it be cool that if we do manage to beat one of those pickups, this sound effect would play from our noisemaker?

Its no rocket for sure, but for me the point is I've never been wanting for power for any practical reason. I generally hate econ-boxes, non-performance 4 cyls and most vans/suvs because there are often times when trying to pass or merge that I find my self yelling at the car "just go for cryin' out loud!" It drives me crazy. To be fair that often has as much to do with crappy transmissions as anything. I've never had that experience in the Prius. Its certainly not nearly as fun to drive aggressively as my WRX was, but its always been able to get the job done in a way that many other vehicles don't. On the plus side since its not as rewarding to drive aggressively I get ~13% over EPA on the Prius, whereas I got 18% below EPA on the WRX ;)

A good example was our trip a few weekends ago from Phoenix out through Globe, AZ, a climb from ~1000 ft to >4600 ft with some twisty grades over 10%. I usually drive my '05 pretty sedately, but when you've got a 36 hr window of babysitting for a camping trip without kids sedate goes right out the window. There were certainly a number of drivers huffing and puffing up the hills more than a little shocked to see a Prius pulling out to pass them at 70+ on an 8-10% incline. At 70-80mph for nearly the whole trip we still averaged over 46mpg. $24 in gas for a 300 mile camping trip is just one of the reason I love this car. Might have been more fun in the WRX, but also would have burned about $70 worth of Premium.

Guess as a new owner, I am pleasantly surprised by my car's performance versus what friends said ("you're buying a ...what?!" "Are you nuts?" "When did you become a tree hugger?" WTH?!!! No offense to anyone - just the malarkey I got to hear first hand)... but when my car had to step up to the plate, she performed perfectly for me. No complaints here and no outrageous expectations... in my case, the perfect choice for me.... And still laughing at my last fuel-up... could have done it with the lawn mower can....

If you haven't already, you should sign up with www.fuelly.com and registar you car and track its mileage. Then you can have one of these niftly signature banners at the bottom of your posts.

I took two friends to the City the other night, the wife was asking if my top speed was limited to 45 mph. I joked that actually, the top speed was 35 mph (she groaned). Served her right. We drove to the City at 62 - 63 mph and got around 55 - 60 mpg indicated. Her husband was impressed.

Add a picture to your Fuelly profile. The way Fuelly sorts, it puts all the profiles with pictures on the top half of the page and the non photo profiles on the bottom half of the page. It then sorts by recent fill ups.
