If the Tutsis had had a few thousand firearms there would not have been any genocide.
Same if the Jews in Nazi Germany were armed.

I deal with gang violence in my line of work. I have yet to hear of a drive by knifing. Care to guess how many drive by shootings we have in the Los Angeles area on a daily basis?

I love it. Just for fun, I jumped into the last page of this thread (disregarding the first several pages).

Sure enough, a reference to Nazi Germany, and a squabble about knives and guns, and gun control. The doberman talking about how he'd rather face a gun than a knife. A sly accuracy from Daniel.

(a post from me, uselessly bitching about it all.)

Pretty good summary of the subforum...

Just to summarize. Why would anti-gun regulation people would oppose having the same regulatory standards of at least cars applied to guns?

It's harder to buy a gun than to buy a car.

AFAIK, you need to be 18 to buy any firearm, and in many states 21 to buy a pistol.

I wish there was a background check to buy a car. Mental health check too. You can be involuntarily committed to a mental institution and still buy a car. You can be a convicted felon and buy a car. You can be convicted of multiple DUI's and buy a car. You can be convicted of vehicular manslaughter and still buy a car.

Also, to actually carry a firearm, it requires even more paperwork and money. You must take a class, pass skill tests and so on.

If this same level of scrutiny and effort was required to get a driver's license I'd be much happier. It would keep many of the incompetent (and dangerous) drivers I deal with every day off the roads.

You keep mixing apples and oranges.

First, most people do not buy cars to be used as weapons.

Secondly, in order to be licensed to drive a car, one cannot have multiple DUI convictions or be convicted of vehicular manslaughter or certain drug offenses. That would cause their driving privileges to be revoked. People are also prohibited from driving cars if they suffer from dementia, seizure disorders or have other physical conditions that cause lapses of consciousness. In California and several other states, physicians are required to report such individuals to the state.

Ever heard of gun shows? Here in WI you can buy a firearm from anyone without any paperwork and no license is required. You only need paperwork if bought at a store.

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(DocVijay @ Apr 21 2007, 03:21 PM) </div>
But at least the car is registered and the license must be transfered when purchased. At that point the DOT makes sure both parties have a license.

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(DocVijay @ Apr 21 2007, 03:21 PM) </div>
So you didn't take a driver's test when obtaining your license? Both a written and practical test?

That is why I argue. If this is acceptable for vehicles there is no rational reason for it to be acceptable for guns. Only that gun ownership carry a certain emotional baggage. Not a problem except that is getting people killed.

Yes, we know what we are arguing about. Since you don't, don't bother posting.

    <div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(Alric @ Apr 21 2007, 05:28 PM) </div>
Yes, I took both a written and a driver's test. Both parts were a JOKE. I could have passed both with my eyes closed.

You see a red sign with 8 sides that says "STOP." What must you do?

Give me a break. These are the types of questions that they ask. If you can't pass the written test... Well, I can't think of anything to say.

For the driver's test, I had to take it when parallel parking was still tested. That was the only thing I was nervous about. I still can't parallel park very well. But I didn't fail. Not even close.

The DOT does not check to make sure a person is licensed to drive when you buy a car. Bring in the form, pay your fee, and the registration is transferred. That is all.

"Not a problem except that is getting people killed." Are you talking about cars or guns, but it applies to both equally.

Finally, the gun show loophole has been closed in many states. If it hasn't in your state, then it's your states fault. Talk to your politicians. The country has been aware of the loophole for decades now. If a state hasn't acted on it yet..

Be nice, Doc. This is Fred's. Anybidy can post who wants to. I can think of several who haven't the vaguest idea what they're talking about who post all the time.

But you really must see the humor in a gun-control argument becoming the topic in a thread about John Edwards' haircut.

I'll have to make some calls tomorrow to get accurate and up to date statistics. In the part of the county where I work we see an average of at least five a week.

This is what I have been able to find on a Sunday evening:

I believe it began early in the thread when someone posed the idea that it was inane to be complaining about John Edwards' proclivity towards expensive barbers at the same time the Virginia Tech massacre was occuring. From that point, it quickly degenerated into the usual Second Amendment debate (to which there is no foreseeable end).
