Narrogin (Australia) Is there an Aboriginal name for Australia, like there's a Maori name for New Zealand? (Or would that be a 'white' name for Aotorea?)
Narrandera, NSW Like the North American Indians, the aboriginal people have a large number of "tribes", all of whom have a different language. I don't believe that they ever had a name for the whole country simply because they did not have a concept that there was anywhere other than the land they roamed over. Do the different tribes of North America have a name for North America? So, to use one of the local Sydney tribes as an example, the Garrigal people, they know that the local land was occupied by the Garrigal people and that other people occupied other land, but that was as far as it went. We have named areas after the people who originally occupied the land, but that was the whites naming the land, not the aboriginals.
Ambanja (Madagascar) I'm not aware of ancestral names for all of North America, though names for certain areas exist to this day. People of the Haida Nation have reportedly lived in Haida Gwaii (aka The Queen Charlotte Islands) for 10,000 years. The Mohawk word for village was Kanata, and the Iroquois word was Canada.
Atapo, NZ Aotearoa was the Maori name for only the North Island of NZ, the South Island was called Te Wai Pounamu (and the "Mainland" by South Islanders). As it happens, there has been recent debate about what to call the North and South islands "officially" since none of the above were ever formalised and Aotearoa is now in common usage to refer to the whole country. "Hone Harawhira, an outspoken Maori Party MP, said: 'It's time to drop the North Island, South Island. Those names don't have any connotation except these people are too dumb to work it out for themselves.'" By the way, New Zealanders call Australia "The West Island"
Eagleville, Tennessee ..............................small crossroads with a post office, about 40 miles from Nashville. "Tennessee in the House"
Um...this isn't going quite the way it was planned, the last couple of posts. The last letter of the most recently posted place gives you the first letter of the place to look for. To make things really tricky, the name has to be new to the thread. The search function will tell you if it's been used before. Anyone have a new place starting with E?
