True but that was a risky venture with family in the car! I added a disclaimer to the first page about safety. I would hate to see someone going for the gold and run out of gas in a bad area with a car full of loved ones.
My first 712+ miles with a tank of gas. Display in the car shows 64.6 MPG. Here are the different parameters. Average temperatures: 80 to mid 90 degrees F. City/Hwy Driving: 90% City and 10 % Hwy Average speed: 29 MPH Tires: Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 LRRs Tire pressure: 44PSI all four. Daily commute: 17.3 miles one way. Air conditioner in the car: On 80% of the time. Stereo: 100% of the time with my added 600 watt sub. Type of gas: 87 grade with 10% ethanol. Last pip started blinking at 676.6 miles on my way to work. I got back to home and went to the gas station (I am picky with where I fill gas in my car.)

Ah, finally you can add me to the 700 mile club. After a long Arizona summer it finally cooled off starting a few weeks ago where I can drive without AC. The first 100 or so miles I hypermiled most of the time. For freeway driving I try to keep iMPG around 60-75 when going uphill for those short hills and pulse a little on the downhill to build speed back up. My speed on the freeway is mostly 60-65. Used AC. The remaining 550-600 miles - No AC, avoided freeways. I took alternate routes where I would use regular roads to where I wanted to go. P&G whenever possible. DWB whenever I could without pissing people off, which is tough. People love to race to a red light then slam on their brakes. I don't know how you guys do it. I always have at least a few cars behind me in different lanes when I am timing a light. At times I find myself gliding a little faster than I want to towards a light, which results in having to stop briefly at a red light. Time of the year: October 9-22 Blinking warning light came on at 583 miles, driving 117.3 miles more after the blinking warning light. DTE = 0 @ 618.6 mph, driving 81.7 miles more after DTE-0 Miles: 700.3 Gallons Pumped: 10.836 MFD = 68.5 mpg Calculated = 64.6 mpg MFD vs. Calculated = -3.9 % Error = 6.04% Avg Speed: 26 mph Edit: error %
Congratulations! One of the great things with doing this is that it will give you confidence in the distances you can drive your car. You are correct, it is hard to drive without brakes with people riding on your tail. But now you can tell people you can drive over 700 miles on your car between fill-ups (and very, very few cars can do this). Great tank and great average!
Thanks guys! Your MFD *10 math and calculating my largest error % (6.6%) with my MFD at the time which was 68.2 gave me confidence that I wouldn't run out of gas. By your MFD*10 calculations I was guessing I would use 10.9-11g and using the largest error % I was thinking 11g. So glad it worked out.
And using 11x displayed would have predicted DTE = 753.5. Your calculated would have you run out at 11.9 gallons * 64.6 = 768.7 (15.2 mile cushion which is ~ 0.25 gallons). Not that I would ever recommend running to 11x, but it really is close to your true DTE. The thing I like about 10x DTE is that you will be well past the flashing PIP start and past DTE = 0, but still have 1.5 gallons left (estimated 75 miles of range). So your heart won't race so much if you are 20 miles from home and want to fill up at your normal gas station.
Totally agree with this statement! I took a recent road trip to Texas...if I didn't know exactly how far I could push my gas tank I would have had to stop to fill up earlier at a MUCH more expensive filling station. Having this knowledge saves you some bucks here and there which can add up to a fair amount over the long run.
I know this is not the time of year to be trying to hit the 700 mile club, BUT... I hope to join this friday or saturday. on the way home yesterday I got the flashing pip at 647.7. I thought I was going to have to wait until spring or summer to try for it but I should squeeze it out.
673.0 yesterday when DTE hit 0 miles. it will hit today I will take a picture. cold outside right now 25 degrees. I will be putting the winter tires on this weekend I suppose. but stay tuned for my 700 picture
so I tried to take the pic at 700 even but it didnt work while trying to drive details were at 647.7 it started flashing at 673.0 DTE hit 0 today rolled past 700 on the way home. 69.0 at the time when the picture took for the tank MPG. 25 mph average. filled up right after that was 706.5 miles, took 10.371 gallons. 69.1 MPG average, 25 mph I think I can hit a 800 mile tank in spring/summer. with the cold weather it is hard to get 60+.
