60 mpg calculated on a tank?

I disagree with above comments - I have 32,000 on my 2012 avg mpg is 63 best was 74 worst 56 have used eco mode since day 1 and all my driving is short distances - so i disproved mpg killer is short driving and not using eco mode. I drive sensibly/

 

How short is short? With my Gen2, 4 miles seems like its about the shortest you could do without warmup dragging your mileage down.

 

I agree I have a trip to work and home that is less than 3 miles and it really lowers my average. I usually get less than 50 and some times its less than 40 mpg for that. even if the batt is charged up toward the top starting out. If I dirve 10 miles the same way my mpg goes over 60 mpg almost every time. so short trips can really kill your mpg

 

Winter has been mild recently -- sunny days, dry roads. Daytime temps in the high 40sF, early AM low 20sF. I have been averaging about 60 mpg in our Prius vagon on the days I commute to work: 30 miles of rolling hills each way, few lights, speeds mostly in the 50s mph with ~ 3 miles of P&G.

Certainly a Prius 'c' can do better.

First tank...

I filled up today I drove 356.7 miles. on 8.2 gallons of 87 octane with 10% ethanol. Yeah 43.5 mpg and I drove it like a normal vehicle. I was not careful about how I drove. IE I was not trying to be fuel conscious...I kept up with traffic at stoplights, ect. 90% of that driving was 18 mile one way to/from work average speed of 25mph, with about a half a dozen traffic lights. and tires @ 35psi all the way around.
Filled up at 2 bars showing, but not flashing. have a few hills going to and from. So we'll see how it goes on the next tank.

Just nice to see that I can it like a "normal" car and get nearly twice the fuel mileage of my old HHR.

On my next tank I'm going to try to keep the ECO bar out of the PWR zone and see how it goes, and not have the ECO mode switched on...

The hills and the traffic lights will hurt it somewhat, but don't be surprised to see that 43.5 mpg move up well into the 50s and possibly 60 when you take a few steps, like watching the ECO gauge, to improve it. At a 25mph average speed, you can do much better than 43.5 in a C. To use a Star Trek analogy, a Prius and it's handy dash gauges can be like the BORG. You may be Priusized if not careful.

Marc, I see it now. 2010. Still, you are right, when you get serious about trying for better mileage, it will get interesting. If you are happy with 43.5, it can only get happier.

 

rj, definitely better than the 22-25 I was getting in the HHR around town.. and better than the 30 i was getting on the highway in the HHr on trips..

How do you get this, I have 450 miles and the best I got was a coup;le 6 mile trips at 64.9mpg. But my average for the tank was only 45-48 becasue the same 6 mile trip in the mornings only gets me about 42 mpg (not warmed up?) I get high 50s and mid 60s when the car is warmed up on 3-6 mile trips. But the morning with cold starts is a killer! Maybe summertime will be better!
