One year later and my HID's are running great. This is by far one of the best upgrades for a Prius III

Ok, ordered 5000K kit from HIDExtra. Winter is coming and I'll be doing alot more commuting in the dark.

I've been doing HID conversions in my vehicles since a GM truck in 2000. I can't believe full kits are now $44.

Just installed the 4300k 55w DDM kit. They are a little bit brighter than the 35w kit which is just right for me.

However, the right side bulb flickers like its vibrating for less than 5 seconds after the initial ballast warmup. Then it is normal throughout the night. I do have the extra wiring harness installed so it is pulling power from the battery. Battery meter reads the usual full bar minus that top 2 bars.

seems like hidextra's kits are having some issues with startup flickering according to clublexus thread and on top of that they are not really responsive to email.

I am thinking of going with kbcarstuff.com but there seems to be a lag of reviews. Their kits costs twice as much as hidextra, but if they are trouble free I will bite. Anyone here can comment on kbcarstuff.com? thanks

I bought my second set from KBCarstuff and they were great with communication answering all my questions. The kit works perfect (had it over a year). My first kit was a cheapo and it was horrible.

I've had a few kits from them, no issues.

only thing I don't like is some of their kits don't plug-in to the existing hardness...they have metal pins that you have to slide in to the harness plug and tape.......verify this BEFORE you buy one.

I recently installed 5000k low beam hid kit from hidextra. I'll write a short review soon after I get to drive with them at night several times. As for first impressions...they look great. Ballast were decent quality and installation was easy as it was plug n play. I did notice some flickering, but I want to give them a little breathing room because I mounted placed the ballasts in temporary spots with zip ties. I'm hoping the few times I saw flickering is because the ballasts aren't fully mounted...then again the lights are always turned on while at parked so moving ballasts wouldn't really be an effect for flickering... :/

Hi Jord...I have HIDExtras in mine. Did you get the relay wiring harness or just put in as a straight replacement? I got the harness but put lights in straight to begin with..work fine. Then I put the harness in the system, properly wired, and NO lights. I even got another harness but the same result. Taking the harness from the original driver's side light cable that was attached to the original bulb, wired to battery remote terminal in fuse box (getting power ok), and remainder of attachments going to the ballasts.

If you or anyone else have the relay harness in the loop, I'd appreciate a comment that may explain why my harness (es) doesn't work??

Thanks, the lights otherwise are fine. I went from 6k to 5k.

I have the relay. I remeber them not working at first and read I had to plug them in a different way (rotate the plug).

I am confused about this whole relay issue. Theoretically, there should be one. The kits from hidextra do not include them and claim they are plug n play. I just called them and they reaffirmed the relay-free installation. Is this because the OEM headlight wiring already has its own relay so the HID kit is essentially running on the already-existing relay?

Also, are there any issues with these after market kits putting a strain on the car's electronics during the initial start-up as it initially pulls in a high current before settling down?

The purpose of the relay is to have clean power to the HID's. This is similar to installing an amp and having the power directly to the battery instead of tapping into the power somewhere along the wiring harness. It is optional in most of the kits I've seen including mine. I choose to use the relay becuase I read somewhere that HID's were sensitive to failing if power isn't pulled direct. Don't know how true all this is but it sure can't hurt.

I have been reading alot about HIDs and there is also a capacitor mod that removes the flickering. The capacitor adds voltage to fill the 12v line side when the voltages drops and goes up and down a little. Any HID ballast is not tolerant to fluctuating voltages. Google it.

With the wiring harness there isn't any flicker. The HID's have been rock solid for more than a year and a half.

12V on a prius is supplied by the Inverter while in ready mode...not the tiny little 12v battery thats used to boot the computer.
If there is "any" flickering, you need to have your inverter checked out,... it should be rock solid.
