4th generation coming 2015!

When I was buying my c last year, the dealer guy told me that Toyota usually averages about 5-6 years between major redesigns for models, so the earliest we should expect the v and c to get a major overhaul is probably late 2016-early 2017.

The Gen III came out in late 2009 right? So 2014-2015 sounds about right.

 

It was unveiled in February or March, and we started buying them in May 2009.

 

How truthful is Edmunds? Why would they assume the whole prius line? I mean ultimately, Prius V and C don't far from the line in terms of design. Yeah they came out later (so did the plugin)...

I'd be curious with a push to Li-ion if the Prius V becomes the seven seater that people in other countries have. Or maybe there're two editions since the V isn't selling that badly.

 

Personally I highly doubt the v and c will get updated when the regular Prius does. A little higher chance the PiP would since it is so similar to the regular.

 

So many good question ..... and so few answers.
Regular Prius? 'V"? "C"? Li-on battery? Seven seater? AWD? Wireless charging? NS4 inspired?
Not to mention when ..... when will Toyota reveal more? model year 2015? 2016?

I seem to recall that Diane said something about the new design will "know our socks off." Hopefully, she knows what she is talking about .... I am ready for a change of socks.

With Honda bowing out of the competition .... what is the greatest treat to Prius ... the VW?

 

What is uber interesting is that spy shots of the C and V were what, 12 months at most before the release? So...being that there was already a 4th gen spy shot where does that leave us?

But, the difference there was that it wasn't the body I don't think, only the engine that was being tested (and maybe the batteries)?

 

inferno, I tend to agree with you, especially if the G4 does not appear until model year 2016. I can't imagine that sheet metal decisions would have been finalized that far ahead. BUT .... as was discussed on the thread, there were subtle differences noted in the "spy shot" and the current Prius. For example the roof, as well as the placement of the mirror with respect to the window line. That is two of the things that I recall.

 

The odd unfortunate/fortunate thing was that it didn't look 'cool' as Dianne suggested. It just looked like a slightly larger Gen III Who knows until it's actually released. But the silence is definitely making me think there will be a 'show' on it this year not beyond summer!

 

Seems to be the real one! Muffler, exhaust pipe and rear suspension are really different too! Signs of a rear independent suspension (Needed for AWD) and maybe lower located batteries as in Prius C.

Come to think of it, that spyshot might indeed be the Gen IV, why else would they hide it like that like all the other Gens before release? Yes the inside was more to be desired but...they could've strolled around a Gen III with a TGNA architecture perhaps. Probably because GenIV is no longer a concept vehicle and is coming...

It not being shown at the Detroit Auto Show shouldn't be discerning at all. What better stage than the Big Apple?

 

Prius liftback sales are down 30% to date this year in US. Liftback / Pip combo in 20th place among cars in US. it's dropped quite a few spaces. Used to be within top 15.

It's got the MPGs, but there are a lot better conventionals to be in and drive these days.

 

Toyota had 5+ years to work on G4 and since last year they have been bragging on about the new TGNA platform and how its features (low centre of gravitity etc.) will be driving new Toyota designs ground up, we see a lot of this "X design language" in new Toyota prototypes and even the new Aygo. But after all this, if all we can expect for the Prius G4 is a few changes here and there, I don't even have words to expain how dissapointed I am.

 

I'm pretty sure there will be more than a few changes and not the Japanese 2014 PiP refresh which looked cooler no doubt.

My guess is that ok, if the cover-up beginning of last year was the G4, it was only used to test the TGNA platform, and was more of a prototype body. I think it's a challenging thing to get the shape of the car right so it looks cool but doesn't lose mpg. Look at all the other options. Non can touch the mpg partially because of the coefficient drag. Yes they are getting close and what GM is doing with the Volt 2.0 is interesting (3 cylinder - my guess is the battery propulsion will make up for it).

Can a 3 cylinder engine coupled with a battery achieve the same performance while sipping less gas? I wonder Volt 2.0 is due out 2016 or so though, won't probably here an announcement until next year I'm guessing.

I think at the moment GM is the closest competitor to what consumers want to drive. Then maybe Tesla as they drive down prices. Isn't the Volt cheaper than a PiP now?

 

Pretty darn close to each other, depending on where you buy.

 

Since the economic/business perspective of "competition" requires profit, Volt doesn't really. Then when you consider Volt gets a $7,500 tax-credit and only $2,500 for PiP, they are definitely not on even footing.

Put out in the traditional market to fend for themselves, Toyota is much better positioned already. The Gen-4 should make it even more so.

Remember, the goal is high-volume sales for the entire Prius family.

Ahhh they are taking long to confirm what the Gen4 will be.

Yes the Volt is an interesting car, but they don't have the reliability history of the Prius family.

 

I don't know what's worse, dealing with spiders or termites.
