I hate to say this but I really do think we'll see something small for range like 20-22 miles EV for the Gen IV Prius Plug-in. If that's the case I'll be getting either a regular Prius liftback again or a car from a different company with greater EV range.

The non pip prius doesn't need much battery capacity at all to do its magic.
Larger is better but not critical and I've posed the question already about why it's not any larger yet and it seems Toyota is reserving them for pip use only as it would be of little benefit verses cost.

I've argued we should get a choice to have the larger bank for efficiency reasons alone but oh well... I can't even get a pip yet without going out of state.

I was only talking about the Plug-in when making my post.

I saw a video on I think it was Motor Trend where the guy was testing a Prius (2012) and he was at the Toyota facility in Japan. At the end of the video he said he was sworn to not to tell anything about the Gen 4 Prius, but at the end of the video he held up his hand and it has "60" marked on it.

IMHO, there are so many 'low hanging fruit' that could be pursued. There was a 'sticky' on recommended improvements for the ZVW30, mostly gone quiet now. But I could see a lot of those ideas becoming excellent 'rumor' basis. But that begs the question, should we limit ourselves to 'official rumors' or are SWAGs Ok?

Yeah, there was an article in motor trend where they supposedly spoke to some engineer or something for Toyota in Japan and one of the things they 'leaked' was that the Gen IV would get 60mpg.

60 mpgs or not, the new design is not what I think a Prius should look like, IMHO  . Hopefully my 2012 Gen III will be around a long, long time as I like the design and the "look" - and I will have to learn how to drive her in snow. If it ain't broke, why fix it?

And when I was getting warm weather mileage, 60 mpgs was a norm, not something to strive for. Winter. Just. Stinks.

    JMHO...

Ok Ocean eyes, it must not be a male / female thing, I showed the picture to my wife and she loved it saying "do you think we can wait?".
I told her "I don't know about you but I can!"... LOL!

I do like the regular Prius too or I wouldn't have 3 of them.

I do feel the new look will be popular but they would be crazy to not continue making the present look available too... It's just too popular not to... So I think your safe.
2 or 3 years after that the market will tell.
But for now. Many other vendors have all but copied the look due to great aerodynamics. There have been complaints quite a while about needing a more sporty look.

Vendors like tesla and even the Chevy Volt are coming out with a more sporty look to satisfy the masses.

Glad your wife liked it - it is just a bit over the top for me and I wondered about the aerodynamics but the designers and engineers probably have that figured out. Even the looks of the c and the v had me saying "no" to the salesman - he was so trying to get me to look at the v and it was just not "me."

As long as they keep one like the current hatchback I am OK - even if they tweak it...

I haven't warmed up by the v either.
Goes in the opposite direction of sporty imo, but nice family cars.

Plug-in owners just want double or triple the battery. That's all we ask for.

Double still isn't enough to keep me in a Prius plug-in come Gen IV. And I sincerely feel we will not anywhere close to 30 never ins upper 30's-40 so come Gen IV it'll be a regular prius liftback or a completely different plug in vehicle which offers usable range for what I require. I gave the original estimate of 15 a chance in the pip but after many months now it is simply too little to justify, for me. Now saying everyone, but for me. At least I have a little less than 3 years to wait and see what I'll ultimately decide.

So it sounds like your recommending if your considering buying now, get a regular prius or wait for the genIV pip?

I don't think he is recommending any such thing.
He is saying for his own car buying decision, based on his needs.
Just as everyone should buy the car that most closely meets their needs and desires.

Appologies Paradox for speaking for you;)

I'm just weighing the hassle of getting one out of state and the added expense.

It's for my wife anyway, she's not thrilled at the idea of plugin anyway without good reason.

It totally depends if around 12 miles give or take pure ev would work for her/you. Yes, some get more, some get less, you can play with using ev mixed with hv etc but that's all play. If you wanna just get in and drive in ev around 12 is what I get without major hill climbing etc.

I want to go to Brooklyn from Staten Island and back without charging. The pip doesn't cut it and we are only talking about 17 miles. I want to go from Staten Island to NJ and back round trip around 26 miles where I need to go and it won't do it. Sure getting 50 mpg is still great once ev range runs out but without playing around with plugging in for half trips I'd just be content with 50mpg all the time. If I could get around 35ev range for most of my trips I'd be more content.

It's just you have to size up what would work best for you.

There are lots of good reasons to get a PiP. All I am saying is the best car for one person doesn't mean it will be the best car for everyone.
What distance is your wife's commute?
Will the car be used outside of commuting?
    How important is comfort/luxury items?
How important is immediate money savings?
How important is cost to fuel and maintain?
How important is not financing the deaths of some of our own soldiers?
How important are personal CO2 emissions?
    How important is technology?

I am sure there are many other considerations as well. What fits for one person is not going to fit for another.

We have all driven Priuses for several years now so we love them, and both of our commutes is 80 to 120 miles. I was thinking the p.i.p in general would just get better gas mileage even without the EV portion due to the enhanced battery pack.
I guess getting the first few miles of our commute free is a plus but it may not be worth it

Not with that commute IMO. Just stay with the lift back.

Agreed, 11-15 miles out of the 80-120 just isn't worth it. If the hatchback has served you well and you both enjoy it I would recommend sticking with it.
