Prices are lowered on the Avalon because they don't sell well. Also the Avalon has one of the lowest resale values of any car on the road today. I do like the Avalon though. I've had my eye on them for years but the price always scares me away. The other thing that drives me away from sedans is they lack cargo space. The Avalon has only 14 Cu Ft where the Prius has 21.6 and we use every bit of that.

jdonalds - Thank your for your note. I do not understand why the Avalon does not sell well, I think it is a "well kept secret."

Heretofore, I have speculated that 50mpg Prius seemed to be a barrier that is difficult to exceed. To achieve 50 mpg, required the optimization, or a combination of many factors (weight, ice, tires, aerodynamics and etc), and commented on how easily the fuel efficiency was impacted by external conditions, such as heat, cold, wind, and standing water on the road. I think it will be interesting to see if the G4 can achieve the 10% improvement touted, and if it requires the same conditions (weight, ground clearance, less insulation, lighter/cheaper interior).

I think it is interesting how Toyota achieved 40 mpg in the Avalon, and did not sacrifice comfort, quietness, performance, and dragging the front end on every dip in the road. It remains to be seen what cold weather will do, but summer heat does not seem to have diminished the efficiency or performance. Even though I cannot explain it, I suspect the HV battery is a bigger factor than I had realized, (size and density). It makes me wonder if the battery could have been further improved in the Prius?

    Felt,

Expect winter to knock off 9 to 10 percent, YMMV of course.
    After 5.5 years in 2010,

    Summer 52.9
    Spring 51.9
    Fall 50.7
    Winter 48.0

    Overall 51.0

I too marvel at squeezing 50 mph out of a family car. I've tried to imagine the drip drip drip of gas while going 60 mph. I've hit 60 mpg at 60 mph many times. That means consuming a gallon per hour. That's about 2oz per minute propelling a 3,000 pound car, plus inhabitants, against a 60 mph wind. Truly amazing.

The Avalon is really a nice car. The truth is it is simply at least $10K out of my price range.

Full size generally sell less than mid-size in regards to sedans.

The top mid-size cars sell in the 300k to 400k range.

The Avalon isn't doing bad in its class, but it has had a reputation among some for being bought by the same people buying Grand Marquis and Oldsmobile. The new model may have fixed that.

agreed, looks like it does very well, and the hybrid numbers probably reflect the premium. it's funny how people can become enamored with a vehicle, and wonder why everyone doesn't drive one. to compare hyav to prius makes no sense.

He cites "Christian Today" as his source for the November date.

Yeah, November reveal would make a lot of sense: Production starts (for 2016 Prius ) on Nov 30th, 2015 (see Arifleet, Element fleet charts),
we get a November reveal, then Thanksgiving and Christmas, New Years holidays, then shazam, the Prius arrives in January. ..... So much time for the press to test drive and write articles about the car during the holidays, right?

,..... No, it is not being revealed in November.

Can we perhaps not see 'Masterherald type' sources for info?

I can't imagine Toyotas own magazine being wrong about the Gen. 4 Prius debut,so I still believe that the new Prius will be revealed in September at the IAA in Frankfurt !
Maybe it will have its 1st appearance in the US at the Los Angeles Motor Show, but it will be uncovered in Frankfurt !
