Gen3 Prius PHV can do 60 mph glides before entering HV mode.

I know. But with only 13 miles EV you don't get much opportunity to use the capability.

    My frustration on my commute:
    (Usual) 20.6 miles: 9.5 miles 50-55mph. 5 miles 45mph.
    (Interstate) 22.8 miles: 16.9 miles Interstate. 1.5 miles 50mph.
It's rolling hills so there are plenty of downhills where a true glide (rather than SHM) would help.

Yup, the gas engine would not turn under 60 mph (62 on speedometer), indeed a true glide.

When you climb hills, so what the gas engine assist? It keeps the battery charge depletion low, efficient and consistent. You may be able to maintain speed uphill without engine assist.

Purpose built is loaded with compromises... which supporters are working hard to now downplay. The biggest problem is the concern expressed 2 years ago, in the bankruptcy recovery plan:

    TOO LITTLE, TOO SLOWLY

Oil is currently at $98.82 (NYMEX future) with expectation for it to continue climbing. Gas prices aren't going to be pretty this summer.

Meanwhile, Volt is priced well beyond the reach of middle-market and engine-efficiency isn't any better than a traditional vehicle... in other words, still years from being competitive.

The current warranty is 8yr/100K miles. Seems plenty for early adopters.

Is AT-PZEV relevant for those who can run primarily in CD mode ?
GM's ICE technology is definitely not on par with Toyota and in a way I'm glad they did not let that hold up the rest of the Volt electrical drivetrain.

Higher gas prices play into the strength of the Volt's superior AER.

    Great example of vague.

How high (gas)? How far (range)? How much (price)?

It could easily backfire too. There's a delicate balance between supply & demand, and GM has put all their eggs in one basket.

Yes, to drive in California HOV lane and during CS mode for those extended freedom drives.

    Remember this ad?

"This isn’t a country where plans made at 9:00 necessarily apply at 5:00. This is America, Man! Home of the highway, last minute detours and spontaneous acts of freedom. We’re wanderers, wayfarers, even nomads."

If it is not relevant, they would be driving ZEV (Leaf).

Most early adopters own more than one vehicle, especially in California.

The Volt is a perfect commute vehicle with it's high AER compared to the other PHEV's on the market.

More reasons to buy the Leaf instead of the Volt. Leaf will get a white HOV sticker and it costs less than the Volt with higher AER.

Prius PHV will get a blue HOV sticker and it won't have range limitation. It can be a single mid-size car for the family.

Looks like they moved a couple grand worth of electronic to the "optional column", will be interesting to see where the price ends up on a base 2012 (AT-PZEV model)
