Pretty sure service package that provides maintenance for two years also provides towing. That is a lot of hassle to get a second fob. I've used an optional protection plan to get a replacement key, but that did not have the hoops of calling a tow truck to take me and the car to the dealer. And some will have a second key through their phone. Sure some are willing to waste a a half day or more for this, but is a small cost for Toyota. Then they'll have to pay that locksmith to get back use of the original fob. Toyota has promised the customer two fobs; one just at a later date. If the customer loses the fob they have, and Toyota is the one that pays to replace it, they have a record of them supply a customer with that second fob. Toyota is allocating replacement fobs to cover the lost or extras that were needed before their fob shortage. Some of the dealers' supply can also be third party outside of Toyota's supply lines. A few tens of thousands isn't going to drain that pool to the point of hindering production of cars.
Not sure if any of you are following the discussion on ToyotaNation. Here’s the link and a recent attachment from ToyotaCorp… No Second Key FOB | Toyota Nation Forum
I called my dealership and made an appointment for next week, funny thing was that the parts guy said that there’s only 95 fobs in the whole country for the Prius prime.
The dealership that I bought the car from was giving me conflicting information about the second fob so I called Toyota corporate office and they said that the fobs are available and I should try another dealership so I called a local dealer and they said that they have them available and I have an appointment for next Wednesday. Fingers crossed!
I bought my 2023 Prius Prime XSE last week and was told it would be at least a few months before I got the 2nd FOB..
and those customers are paying $5k above MSRP for their 2023 Prius Prime - So July 1, 2023 and still giving only one Fob!
Okay, now I’m really mad! Called over a week ago, got an appointment for today to get my second fob and ……. Wait for it…… sorry it’s not here you’ve got to be kidding me . So now the are saying tomorrow! Also they did my 10,000 mile service and put in 0W20 instead of 0W16 oil! I’m really getting to the point of walking away from Toyota until they can get their act together.
FINALLY! After seven months of waiting I finally got my second fob today. And they checked with the service tech who confirmed that he installed 0W16 oil they just don’t have a code for it so they just enter 0W20. They said that most people don’t have a clue anyway.
