It's simple - it doesn't. Take up so much space, that is. There is quite a bit of dead space above the battery in its' cage under the seat. They had to make the cage able to fit both battery types.

 

oh ya, i'm expecting big things. an improvement like the gen 4 lift back over gen 3 isn't going to work.

 

Prius Prime sounds much better than Prius Plug-in ,but one the other hand "Prime" sounds also very expensive...

 

I guess it could be prime... If this can do more mpg than the eco version than it is prime. And I mean hv mode.

 

Prime is the highest usda grade!

 

They'd have to introduce it as a '17 to be a Prime.

 

You and me both. The thing I don't get is the huge Grill work look. With so many plugins sporting very small front in - or at least front grills that can close up to decrease drag - what would be the point of having so much mouth-iey face going on?!!? Still - a nice - large amount of electric range will be the most important. Lots of us are holding our breath.

Is this supposed to even be held out as the plugin? because the right hand page says it's a Mirai advertisement. Just a thought for those wondering why only one 'fuel' port.

In my industry, prime refers to product that has so far made it through the manufacturing process on the first pass. Non-prime product are the items that have failed some specification and must be reprocessed, or derated to a lower specification.

If the new PiP is Prime, then the non-Prime Prius (standard hatchback) has inferior quality.

I prefer the name Prius Plug-in. It describes something people are already familiar with, plus the additional capability.

I wonder if the whole strategy of the new Prius PHV, is to make it the more mainstream alternative in appearance to the regular 4G Prius, in order to boost sales of the plug-in through upselling to long-time Prius owners looking to upgrade, but don't want to consider the regular version.

 

How much more expensive was a base pip compared to a base Gen 3 Liftback?

Just trying to guage where pricing might start at?

 

What do you think the federal tax credit will be on the new one?

 

If it's just one of our guesses, does it really matter? Right now - Toyota's biggest push has been for their fuel cell technology. I think all of us who are waiting for the rev II Pip are lucky that it's even being offered up, much less whether or not it will be delivered to every state. Toyota has already tried to diminish plug-in credits to make hydrogen technology seem more appealing. If your state legislators throw any bones to the pip GEN II, it will primarily be because GM is pushing incentives for their Gen 2 volt .... & the Pip may be able to ride GM's coat tails, IMO. Si we'll see how it goes.

Sounds like you've been reading too much into the rhetoric. We always knew battery advancement would bring about a new generation. We also knew they would focus elsewhere in the meantime.

I saw no benefit from Toyota joining the former market with so many problems plug-in offerings were having to deal with. True, their distance was spun as anti-EV, but that has no connection to next-gen rollouts. We've seen many examples of that in the past.

What makes us lucky is Toyota staying true to aiming a product directly at the masses, not giving into enthusiast misdirection. The true competition is traditional vehicles, not other plug-in vehicles.
