I'm glad to see them building a car like this. I do, however, think they could have been a bit more strict with emissions control. It's not a matter of it being their turn to pollute now, it should be a matter of them being able to adopt the things we've learned as a whole to help prevent further pollution. Remember, the standards they claim this car meets, although a great deal better than nothing, are not as strict as the tightest European standards, never mind U. S. standards.

I'm happier to see them doing it themselves. Other companies have offered up designs for developing countries, whether the cars were merely concepts, like the Chrysler CCV, or production realities, like the Renault/Dacia Logan. It would have been too easy to allow an invading company such as Toyota or GM to do it for them.

If successful, this car will join the pantheon of people's cars, such as the Model T, the Volkswagen Beetle, and the Citroen 2CV.

The Japanese had very few private autos after WWII. Yet without them industrializing, there would be no Priuschat now.

I hope that those worried about India needing more gas are not owners of 8600 lb vehicles hauling one person around.

One further note, In Japan, once the price of an auto decreased to one years salary, the sales took off. It sounds like India is getting close to that point.

Before praising (or dismissing) the Tata Nano, one should consider how the Ford Model T affected the United States. The principle is exactly the same.

It's quite possible that the Tata Nano may do to India what the Model T did to the US.

    Ding ding ding!!!!!

Anyone who wants to critisize the Indians better not be eating any beef..... Corn fed, or grass fed or any other type.

Average Indian emits 1200kg per year compared to 20 tons for the average American!

I asked a friend whom recently visited India about the price of the scooters. He said $800 for a scooter and $1,200 for a motorcycle.

Tata Nano is 2x to 3x more expensive and seats 2x more with all weather capability.

I think I can make out what you are saying??; and there we go again with the 'Let them eat cake' mentality. And so what if the average Indian achieves the standard of living that enables them to put out 20 tons of CO2/year? Good for them.

Really, just who are WE (those of us fortunate to live in a first world country) to dictate how another country and its people conduct their affairs when it comes to economical advancement?
