Granted ... even so, even relying on the dealer for everything ... the dealer price to just replace a compressor that died a natural death is not going to be as spectacular as the dealer price to replace the whole ever-lovin' A/C system after having the wrong oil put in. I just think the former would be more representative of possible naturally-occurring costs. The $6,600 is a real outlier that resulted from actual damage being done to the car.

And even to the committed non-DIYers, I'd still say a word in favor of knowing where to find the manuals and the on-line dealer parts catalogs. Even if you firmly intend never to turn a wrench yourself, there can be times that if you have just looked up some information yourself, you can ask questions like "isn't the evaporator available separately, isn't this the part number? Wouldn't that save me $3000 compared to replacing the whole assembly?" The more you learn about your car yourself, the better able you are to ask those kinds of questions when having work done at the dealer.

You guys just scared the poor guy away from a good deal... lol

Honestly, you should check kellybluebook value first before even thinking about buying a car. Do your research, its easier.

You say scared. I say saved from a disaster. Even if the car was new, some money need to saved for incidentals. Spending down everything with no emergency fund is risky.

That could be, IF it was in good shape and if the price was reasonable. Thinking of 209K as such a terribly scarey number has been obsolete thinking for decades. Many cars cruise far past that mark without major problems.

However, besides the traction battery and compressor, another item critical to check out on a highish- mileage Prius would be engine oil consumption, considering the anecdotes of some Prii becoming oil-guzzlers at modest mileages.

    Hi Elrik,

I realize it may be a little late to join the discussion, but I totally agree that it would not be a good buy.
This weekend I got my first Prius, a 2010 with the Technology Package and Solar Roof Package. No accidents, original owner car with 135,000km on it (~85000 miles).
I got it for $CAD11200, which works out to be ~$USB8600, only slightly more than you would have paid for something with a lot more mileage. There will always be good deals out there; just keep an eye out for them. If you have to buy a Prius, make sure it will last, even if you have to shell out an extra few grand.

And while it may not be worth it for someone living in the Southern States, anyone living closer to the border could potentially get a very good deal in Canada with the currency exchange rates as they are with the Canadian dollar.

    Just my 2 cents' worth.
