Has anyone confirmed that Toyota has removed all spare tires in the new Prius? I believe in the Gen 4's, only the AWD's didn't have one, the rest did. I'm, also, interested in the ground clearance as the Gen 5 looks to be a few inches lower which would be a big problem in snow-country. (Hopefully the AWD versions aren't that low.) I, still, think the rear end in the Gen 5 is UGLY...butt ugly! (Get it??)
No confirmation on spare tire. Gen 5 has more ground clearance than Gen 4. 5.6" (LE) 6.0" (XLE/Limited). Gen 4 is 5.0" (4.8" for Gen 4 Prime)
The upper level (called 4 in the first years in the states IIRC) didn’t have a spare. Toyota seems to nix the spare for a couple of reasons: bacause it’s physically impossible (due to AWD for instance), or to keep the weight down.
Yeah I think I see AC but I'm just wondering if it's just my brain filling in the missing information or it really is AC.
I'll repeat this: I would have loved more MPG instead of speed. Why are Americans so speed crazy? I don't understand why they couldn't make this car get 70 to 80 MPG.
This car's primary audience is in Japan. While they do get the 1.8L, they also have the Aqua for an efficient option. Plus, the Corolla has its own line of stores there. Toyota is trying to position the Prius as something a little more upscale; a smaller sibling to the new Crown. They actually started doing this with the gen4 Prime. They'd be 'Buicks' if Toyota had such an in between brand. That's why there is a more performance option. It also helps with EV competition. The 2L is the newer engine. North America is only getting the 2L because we have always been short changed on engine choices. It costs a lot to have another option certified, and Prius sales are already low. The 1.8L would likely steal more sales from the Corolla hybrid than the competition. Even if we got the 1.8L, it might get 65mpg. The improvements of each successive generation are a little less. More is possible, but for an increased price.
mpg has decreased, mph has increased compared to Gen 4. However, the LE and SE trims should have better mpg than Gen 4, perhaps except for Prius L Eco. The only problem is that they do not make these base trims. Less mpg = less EV range for Prius Prime. 60 mpg would have been good—something yet to be achieved by Toyota.
they probably couldn't achieve 60, so they are using the power smokescreen to cover for the shortcomings
Totally agree that AWD reduces fuel consumption, and should be for those that like to spend their days on mud or snow But what do you say that electric is better than hybrid? I say be patient and we ll all end up with Leafs or Teslas However, in the mean type I ll continue to put my chips on hybrid technology with 100 year old combustion engine design, until they give me an electric vehicle that last 300k miles priusdotblog
The LE is rated 57mpg city. The 1.8L could reach that 60mpg mark. But would offering it increase profit? Prepandemic, Prius and Prime sales were down to 70k in the US. Offering more than one engine is a large increase to introduction costs. The Prime is getting the 2L to make it more competitive with other plug ins, and isn't getting the 1.8L anywhere. There is probably cost savings in using the 2L in the Prius for the North American market.
and speaking of the Prime .... W/ certainty - Does anyone know max rate of charge? Traction pack cooling tech? Upper & lower traction pack buffers? Chemestry? MPGe? For the millions with below freezing Temps, what temperature does cold weather force the ICE to startup? (& don't EVEN bother trying to ask the local stealership sales critter - prime owners sadly know WAY more than THE product's sellers) .
