    Japan had elaborate annual inspections to encourage new car sales, and many opted to obliged. They also have excellent transit and rail systems, so car ownership is lower than in the US.

    An info tidbit that came out with the gen4 Prime was that about half the residents in Japan only have 100V 6amp service without Level 2 being possible. That's why the PHV could take over 10hrs to charge there, and why CHAdeMO was standard.

    I saw an article saying half of Japan is 60 cycle and the other half 50, and a lot of things won’t interchange between the halves. My other statement was more about if they use fast charging it doesn’t matter as they don’t keep the cars long to see the battery effects. I still see the Japanese import engines and transmissions being sold, many vendors of them. I see little reason to fast charge a Prime. It’s not like you are going on 40 mile stops across the country charging. The whole idea is to have a very economical gas Prius and an ev for most local short trip driving. Sure works for me.

    There is definitely no DC fast charging or a CHAdeMO socket in the factory Gen 5 Prius Prime but only Level-2 AC charging and a CCS1 socket, including the Japanese models. You must have stumbled upon false information on the Internet.

    Japan models also come with the same 3.5-kW OEM charger from the factory. I think someone mentioned that the European models might come with a slightly more powerful (3.6-kW?) charger—I am not sure if this is accurate. What you linked must be an aftermarket-charger modification. If you Google it, there is a lot of talk on PriusChat about DC fast charging aftermarket CHAdeMO charger modifications for Gen 4 Prius as well, which costs well above $2,000. Of course, they are probably detrimental on the lifespan of the little Prius Prime battery.

    Also, if you do a CHAdeMO modification, how do you use AC charging? I guess the modification would have to include both the CHAdeMO and CCS1 sockets under the charging lid.

    Just the engines and trans as far as I know. Supposed to be low mileage take outs. You should buy one.

    Length of potential ownership could be why owners wouldn't care. Toyota included it because of the grid situation and larger group of potential buyers that live in apartments. It isn't about trips, but just charging for daily use. There is already a large number of CHAdeMO chargers for them there.

    It is also why Toyota bothered with a solar roof.

    There is a healthy grey import market of used Japanese market cars going to Australia and Southeast Asia countries.
    It refers to the pre export gen1. One of the big differences to it was the use of cylindrical cells instead of prismatic.

    The people doing conversions are using parts from Toyota Japan.

    The charge port area of your Prime is so large because the CHAdeMO port is installed next to the AC one. That space isn't to be a cap holder. The Japan models have a cap holder on the lid like on the gas one.

    Then Toyota said it has 20 minute quick charging in the 2017 press release. The quick charging standard there is CHAdeMO.

    As for the gen5, Toyota is only selling the top trim PHV there, and maybe only 500 of them a month. Maybe they don't expect buyers to need quick charging. CCS is a fast DC charging standard.

    There is no DC fast charging either through a CHAdeMO DC socket or a CCS1 Combo 1 AC/DC socket in the Gen 5 Prius PHEV in Japan. There is the same CCS1 AC socket as in the US model. Read the Japanese owner's manual I linked. Moreover, Japan does not use the CCS1 Combo 1 or CCS2 Combo 2 AC/DC sockets for DC fast charging but uses the CHAdeMO national standard for that purpose instead.

    I don't know about the Gen 4 Prius PHEV in Japan. I am surprised that they seem to have included DC fast charging for an 8.79-kWh PHEV battery. It was probably a gimmick, and they certainly have got rid of it in Gen 5 if there was such a feature.

    DC charging, even at a low 20kW, is fast charging. Getting near that speed with AC charging is called Level 3.

    A J1227 plug without the DC pins is not a CCS.

    I didn’t know Japanese buyers were impatient. A level 2 at 3.3-3.5 is plenty fast for me. I always gathered the culture was patient. Ok they tend to be patient and polite. Which means if 100 apt dwellers are wanting to use one charging post, no one would sit in it 2-3 hours. Learn something new every day.

    Except, there is no DC charging of any sort in Gen 5 Prius PHEV in Japan. There is neither a CHAdeMO nor a CCS1 socket as I said.

    Level 3 is an historic term that referred to an off-vehicle AC/DC rectifier connected to a three-phase AC system, and it is no longer considered to be a valid terminology.

    So this means Toyota made the gen 4 battery more robust than the gen 5 to take fast charging? They pulled out all the stops for gen 4, then had to dial it back on the 5 due to material shortages. Sounds right to me.

    The Gen 5 Panasonic cells are evolved over the Gen 4 Panasonic cells, offering a longer lifespan, more power, faster charging, and a higher energy density. As I said, DC charging in Gen 4 was probably nothing but a gimmick, and Toyota does not want to needlessly sacrifice the battery lifespan and increase the manufacturing costs anymore.

    Another possibility is that it was harder or more expensive to integrate the my-room mode in the Gen 5 Prius PHEV with DC charging.
