2022 Prime or Wait for 2023 yikes!

    2023 is a wild card at this point I spoke to a very knowledgeable ...well seasoned sales guy who indicated that when they switch production to a new year model there is often a delay of up to a month before they actually start producing the new year model. So... keep that in mind. That doesn't even factor in the delays from shortages. Toyota announced late last week they were cutting October production by 50000 cars and they are shutting down a prime line in one of the 2 factories that make the prime for a week in October. Things are nebulous to say the least.

    You can find a used Limited. No one knows what/when/how/why 2023 will bring.

    I just spoke with 3 dealerships in different areas of the country. Apparently the 2023 models are going to be identical to 2022 models. Guessing that 2024 might be consolidated to a Prime only vehicle which makes sense to me. Although I’d like to I can’t wait that long.

    CA dealership has 700+ people waiting for Prime and 600+ waiting for Prius. They stopped taking deposits.

    I don't think the 2023 model year will be the same as the 2022 model year because we are in October and it hasn't been announced. When there is no redesign, the transition typically happens in mid-August.

    I don't think anyone knows what/when/how/why the 2023 model year will be except the Toyota insiders in Japan. My guess: The 2022 Prius Prime will be discontinued in late 2022. There will not be a 2023 Prius Prime. The 2024 (not 2023) Prius Prime will be available in early 2024. The 2023 Prius (non-plug-in HEV) will be available in early 2023. Note that these are only my guesses. Let's hope that there will be a 2023 Prius Prime.

    The dealers can't tell a Prius and a Prius Prime apart. ;) LOL

    Well that's one opinion but I don't think your assumption about the transition between model years is accurate in the current climate. Everything has been turned on it's head and if you look on Toyota's site there are only select 2023 models out there.

    In the US. For most of the world, the year attached to a car is the year it was built. This difference in year notation has lead to confusion over when a new model will come out.

    At this point, unless they've retooled production or the new 2023 is somehow going to be cheaper to make. There really is no reason for Toyota to change the 2023. 2021 was a 35% gain over 2020 in sales. No reason to make a different saddle if the current one is selling that quickly. They just need to focus on delivering units, not designing new ones until the sales growth drops into the single digits or negative, just leave the product alone.

    I didn’t realize the Prime XLE doesn’t have blind spot warning sensors, cross traffic alert or IPA but regular Prius XLE does. I know Prime is a different car but I thought it was a bit of an upgrade.

    I can live without IPA but a bit nervous with a new car not having the latest safety technology.

    The PRIUS XLE FWD has powered seats but XLE AWD doesn’t. So strange.

    My initial test drive was in Prius Limited.

    I’d sure like to be a fly on the wall during the design process/decision making.

    Some things are changed after the design process. The lack of power seats on the Prius AWD could be because of a parts shortage for example, but more likely it's because the rear motor added weight, and Toyota needed to reduce weight elsewhere, or have to certify separately for something like safety regs.

    I find the blind-spot monitor indispensable. It would be a deal breaker for me if a car didn't have it. For example, this rules out Tesla Model 3 for me, as it doesn't have a blind-spot monitor.
