@Trollbait and I spar here on boats, while @wjtracy seems to be taking my side :) Whatever.

But to clarify, I understand that FL does not require insurance for boat registration, but houses and fancy cars may be held to higher standards there.

Here I would only be interested in defining 'rich' as people with adequate financial resources, but who are also willing to accept public assistance after damaging events. In re I quote a recent ex-President "that's what makes me smart".

Hazardous to go political here, But 2022 N Atl H season is done, and it may be that only damages (insured or not) remain to be tallied, This double-ENSOed, over-predicted H season only calls to readers through financial impacts. Unless you or your gang got whacked.

We'll do it all again in 2023, Lord willin and the creek don't rise.

"the idea of Offshore Wind planned in Virginia" ... There are similar large plans offshore Houston. I'm not amongst engineers planning the$e, but dang, once in a while during equipment service lives, some bigger blows will come.

Hey I love electricity from wind. I even love the idea that toppled offshore wind turbines could make new coral/fish habitats. A very exciting future will come and I hope not to miss most of it.

We have never discussed that before. Wow. I think that GS is pinched and has highest velocity off mid-FL coast where ocean floor depths are not too deep. You would get 6 to 10 m/s flow and need large (100-to-1000-m-scale) propellors at 1-2 km depth. Much as bird are now 'meeting' wind turbines, you would impede the play of submarines there, and they would impede you.

    Is this a serious idea?

We already have tidal turbines. I'm proposing install them in some of the strong ocean currents, It is not a trivial problem as immersion in a biologically active, salt water bath is pretty rough. But with a density 800x of ordinary air, the turbine blade lengths are much smaller.

Herre is a specific example: Massive turbine turns deep ocean currents into electricity

Researchers in Japan hope that deep ocean currents could become a new source of clean energy. They recently wrapped up the demonstration of a massive prototype generator that just spent three years underwater off the coast of Japan, capturing the slow but steady power of the deep ocean.

Deep ocean currents: The same method we use to harness the power of the wind — place large turbines in its path and use generators to convert the mechanical energy of the spinning blades into electricity — can be used to generate electricity from water currents.

All I can say is I'm glad I don't live in Alabama that's Tornado alley. Florida is bad enough but no Tornadoes. Tornadoes are terrifying.
Much worse than hurricanes as you really don't have much of a warning.

In 2011 Alabama got hit very hard by Tornadoes lots of damage lots of deaths so the Tampa ASPCA went up there and rescued over 50 dogs. Owners had died or been displaced from there home it was just horrible. We adopted one of those dogs who had no chip and was found in rubble and was about 6 moths old. He's the joy of our life half chihuahua half jack russell. He's a scamp and brilliant.

Poor guy was found in rubble than trucked down to Tampa in the back of a pick up truck then neutered when he arrived. That's a pretty rough 24 hours but he survived. Him having no chip really blew my mind as he was a beautiful little guy. My wife was the first person who saw him after they put him out in his cage. Sold! You cannot go to a vet today and not get your dog chipped which means he never saw a vet before.

To this day we don't need to watch tv to see if a storm is coming he either hears it very far away or senses the drop in pressure and goes to his hiding spot which covers his head so i suspect the whole house collapsed on him when the Tornado hit. He's been doing that for 12 years.

Sad little guy when we got him but we have made it up to him over the years as he's the king in this house lol....
    He's my dog.

Living in Huntsville AL, we had 4 day 6 hours without power. But my first Prius modification installed a 1.1 kW, 12 V to 110 VAC inverter. That was enough for lights, TV, and gas furnace. We burned two gallons per day with no carbon monoxide risk or noise.

@ pet chips: You can certainly go to a vet without chipping a dog, and I can think of no less than half a dozen people who do not have their pet chipped for one reason or other.
Not advocating this as a wise thing to do, just saying.

@ tornadoes: Bama's bad but most of their twisters are on the small side.
Texasass is the tornado king of the hill with an average of over 135 a year followed by Kansas and then Oklahoma and they tend also to be a little friskier since the thunderstorms that breed them are a little more violent.
The Gulf South is the LIGHTNING capitol of the US.

@ Backup power: If you already have a Prius, there's no better way to get a clean, quiet kW worth of backup power for days on end.
Sadly, clean dependable Priuses are about as hard to find these days as polite political discussions, so I went with propane and a portable generator.
    1/10th the convenience.
    10x the power.
My intentions are to place a 125 gallon propane tank and upgrade my electrical panel with an interlocked manual power transfer and I will probably also place another breaker for a charging circuit in the garage.

Since it's half-past March, I'm waiting with bated breath for the annual 20xx North Atlantic Hurricane Season forecast, which like everyone's child, will be "above normal."

2022 N Atl predictions were closely spaced. So, just NOAA example autopsied:

    14 to 21 named storms became 14.
    6 to 10 hurricanes became 8.
    3 to 6 major hurricanes became 2.

Readers would draw their own conclusions from those.

2022 N Atl damages were large; both insured and uninsured. AFAIK nobody predicts those to public. But the re-insurance industry is a large quiet thing, and I suspect 2023 is being discussed. In quiet places.

    ==
My thought for future is that there may be fewer very calm years. Seasonal hurricane predictions are notable and valuable as they encapsulate current understanding of driving factors. Denigration of those predictions is notable mostly to show where posters might accidentally reveal how their bread gets buttered.

Its only $5 for a chip and yes ALL vets want your dog chipped if nothing else they can identify the dog instantly if any in house confusion.about who's dog this is. Who doesn't want to spend $5 to make sure if there dog runs away or worse gets stolen you can find him?

Did you miss a decimal point?

"A: The average cost to have a microchip implanted by a veterinarian is around $45,"

"Want" is not equal to "You cannot go to a vet today and not get your dog chipped which means he never saw a vet before."

While a quick search suggests that chipping is compulsory in the UK and much (not all) of Australia, I'm not seeing it being indicated as compulsory in most of the U.S.

Sorry didn't know I was going to have to appear in court to explain myself but let me rephrase that:

The first thing a vet is going to do is scan your dog for a chip. Then when they find out your dog has no chip they ask if you want a chip. Because the no chip stops them in there tracks and now they are going to have to talk to you.
Lots of vets would insist you get a chip. I was thinking $5 as that's what they charged me years ago lol. But whatever it is now its cheap because its the best way to recover the pet if they run off.
