Wow. Amazing find. I had read those documents but had not noticed that difference. Now I will have to compare the Rav4 Product info with the Rav4 Hybrid Product info word for word.

It seems weird that they would include that upgrade in the $800 price difference but not include any other changes for the $800 difference in other grades. Is there is a possibility of a typo on Toyota's part?

OK, after carefully reviewing the documents it appears that the higher level Hybrids have "LED projector headlights" and more distinctive LED DRLs. The non hybrids have "multi LED headlights". There are other minor trim differences but nothing significant.

I put the two side-by-side to compare. I expected some additional features in the HV model. The $800 is additional to the AWD upcharge, but maybe the LE HV will be priced more.

All hybrids have projector LED headlights vs. multi-reflector LEDs on non-hybrids. Higher trim have that unique LED DRL as you mentioned.

LE Hybrid has a parabola LED headlight. XLE Hybrid and higher use a projector LED with unique LED DRL.

With some features, yes. The aforementioned headlights, and I can see it with the grill shutters. Dual climate A/C, maybe if the hybrid system comes with an infotainment upgrade.

I didn't see anything about the LE having steel wheels, or the LE HV getting alloys, only the mention of the XLE getting upgraded ones. The LE is now equipped with steelies, but that can change now that the Rav4 outsells the Camry. The Camry LE is equipped with alloys, but the LE hybrid model gets steelies that are an inch smaller in the US. This helps with the EPA test, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the same on the Rav4 hybrid for the same reasons.

So, what difference does having projector LED headlights make compared to multi LED? If projectors throw better light that would put people who don't want a hybrid in a bind.

Given that this is the first time I've seen multi-reflector LEDs, I'm kinda curious lol. On halogens, I find projector lens to have a more focussed light pattern but the majority of cars with halogen lights have multi-reflectors (since about the 2000s). LEDs started off with projector lens.

I guess for us, the difference would be the Gen 1/2 Prius multi-reflector vs. the Gen 3 projector halogens. I found the Gen 3's halogens much better.

Well just an $800 bind... which is really $800 spread over 3, 4, 5 years.

Look at the non-hybrid 2018 Camry LE vs the 2017. Fuelly shows 34.0 vs 27.4 mpg for an improvement of 24%. I maintain that direct injection is responsible for most of the mileage improvement. It is well known that direct injection improves efficiency. That's why other manufacturers have been using it for years. Toyota wanted to ensure reliability and low emissions before widely adopting it. It needs to put the new dual-injector engines in its most efficient models.

Agreed but I think the bind is mostly emotional. I know plenty of people who would never consider a hybrid simply because it is foreign to them. They don't understand how a hybrid works and don't want to learn about it. They also don't understand how their conventional engine works either but they are familiar and comfortable with it.

Right, the projector headlights are on the hybrid XLE, XSE and Limited. Those levels also include daytime running lights with "accent lighting with on/off feature". So, the $800 up charge includes the wheel upgrade for the LE and the headlight upgrade for the other levels.

The Limited hybrid level will also offer an optional "adaptive front headlight system", the only level, hybrid or not, that will offer it.

Okay, didn't realize those were links to PDFs.

The Adventure trim has a 3500# tow rating.

Fair enough. :) I accept your premise.

    Alright.

Also I’d like to make an amendment to my other post. The CR-V and Accord appear to have multi-reflector LEDs (standard or optional).

More to than just direct injection; higher compression, low friction, 8-speed, port/direct injection, weight reduction, ports/combustion flow, etc

So it can have the cargo space of the up coming Crosstrek PHEV?

Crosstrek is much smaller to begin with, then you can potentially package battery better in a car with only electric drive on the rear, but knowing how they packaged the battery in Prime I have doubts Toyota can make more cargo space than Crosstreck :p

For a Rav4 Prime, I expect Toyota to just throw the Prius Prime battery into the rear.
