2019 Prius LE - Needs Engine Replaced

    Cant find it. Thats the first time im reading bout blown head gasket of gen4. A little worried this will not become the same thing we had with gen3

    Have only done this on gen3 sorry i can not say, engines are very similar so hopefully its not too much different

    Its effectively the same engine so its reasonable to believe it may suffer from the same issues

    Funny thing is we seem to see less of it with gen3 in Australia than US, i wonder if the 0w20 and 0w16 oil more commonly used in us may be a contributing factor, in AU we mostly use 5w30, 10w30 or 10w40 in 3rd gen prius, not sure about 4th gen

    If this problem starts with oil burning caking up the cooler, obviously thin oil will blow past the rings easier

    Our local taxi company swapped out two 2ZR engines last month that ran out of compression, one of them had 670,000km

    I don't know of any hybrid specialists in the area besides Tamp Hybrids. Todd does get into some pretty deep stuff with the Prius, so he's a very good possibility. No one I've met knows more about the Prius than him and his lead mechanic Tomaš. Unless someone knows of someone like him closer to Orlando, it would be foolish to not at least check with him.

    Same engine more-or-less, but quite a few mods to the Exhaust Gas Recirculation system: cross-section much increased, and intake now downstream of the Cat.

    Only sort-of the same. i.e. different. This is what TOYOTA said at the time it was introduced in 2016 (my highlights):

    Enhanced hybrid system delivers target fuel efficiency of at least 40 km/L
    The Prius retains its 1.8-liter VVT-i equipped Atkinson cycle petrol engine (2ZR-FXE), which is perfectly for highway driving needs. However, the engine has been completely re-engineered, with remarkable results in terms of performance, fuel economy, and reductions to size and weight.

    The new engine achieves a maximum thermal efficiency of 40 percent―the world's highest level in a mass-produced gasoline engine (as of October 2015, according to in-house research). This improvement was enabled in part through the use of a large-volume exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system and improvements in combustion efficiency. Additionally, a redesigned air intake port improves airflow inside the combustion chamber, while the coolant passages have been redesigned to optimize internal engine temperature. The friction created by the piston skirts, rotating parts and the oil pump has been reduced, while the use of low-viscosity oil reduces friction between sliding engine components.

    i use word "same" as toyota uses word "improved" ... lol

    it will be interesting to see what happens with 4th gen and Corollas as time passes by

    the notable differences are in the size of the egr cooler and in/out pipe diameter,, so can say some engineering modifications.

    Pistons and rings are different part no’s. Also @alanclarkeau posted info about intake port redesign. Not clear if that’s intake manifold or the actual ports in the head, suspect the latter?

    that taxi with the 670k km was it a gen 3? never changed the head gasket? or any issues with the egr cooler?

    i pushed my older sister ( retired now) to buy the corolla hybrid, told her she will keep it for the next 10 years, she drives about 5,000 miles/ year. i drove it a bit last month, very smooth ride gets about 55-60 mpg, took a look under the hood, seems identical to gen 4.

    one of them was a 3rd gen but the one with 670,000km that ran out of compression was a Prius V .. They never change head gaskets at this place, its too time consuming for them and by the time the cars have issues they are burning oil and down on compression. Unsure if the cooler got done on that car but they do occasionally clean an egr because of p0401 which my car has at the moment damn it!!!

    Yeah its more bolt on part differences than internal engine improvements, differences to engine are near nothing, definitely nothing that will help with these issues we are seeing anyway, if it looks like a 2ZR - it is a 2ZR I would expect all the usual issues and perhaps more! not many products these days get better, they just want it to last long enough nothing is built to last these days its just built to cost..

    Im sure your sister will love that Corolla, I really like the look of the corollas myself but im not too keen on the seats and cabin layout, I struggle to find anything more comfortable than gen3 seats (gen2 aren't bad either but do not go down as low as gen3) and really like the cabin layout with the centre console mounted paddle shift and general style of the energy monitor (everyone is different) i have not spent any time with the gen4 yet, they have been nearly ran out of town after release of Corolla late 2016

    I will keep my 3rd gen in service as long as possible

    All those parts are considered bolt ons though, toyota boasting about improvements on these areas is a marketing ploy to sell the consumer a new car with increased economy, not so much extended longevity, when you think about it every time toyota make improvements to epg on new models other (way more expensive) things seem to suffer for it

    Anyway! I'm just a pessimist, too much has gone wrong for me over the years lol, my brain is wired to think it's always going to be bad

    Not sure that TOYOTA have been the real villain in recent years. Overall, their cars have excelled in reliability ratings, particularly HYBRIDS. And, with each generation of PRIUS, there are fuel savings of about 15% over the previous generation.

    Have a look at some of the expensive disasters other manufacturers have come up with - $$UBARU CVT transmissions for one, VW Group D$G Transmissions for another. As for what it will cost to overhaul an 8 or 10 speed Auto? But the Hybrid Transaxle is almost bulletproof - and while it's at it, the brakes are lasting much longer (in some cases the life of the car) than competitive cars.

    Without breaking the momentum of the ongoing thread - could somebody point me in the direction of a post or posts with issues applying to which generations?

    I thought the EGR problem and oil catch cans were only (or at least primarily) issues with the previous generation Prii - ditto for head gasket issues.

    Has Toyota STILL not addressed these by the time the 4th generation came on the scene?

    Just want to know what issues I should lay awake and worry about at night.
