They were parallel, usually Centronics ports but USB was designed to replace them too.

    Maybe both.
What exactly gives you that impression ?
I have posted several times in "those other threads" but repeated comments about the same old thing seems pointless.

And if by "target" you mean the owner, I quite assure you that he knows; and has for a LONG time.

AND I never said I was offended. It takes a really LOT to do that.

2017 Prius 3.... Just read the posts above....I cannot believe the USB port cannot provide power to charge a phone? What a joke Toyota made here... I'm using Sony XperiaXZ phone.... The USB port cannot read the data from it and will not charge the phone as well. How sad,

No offence Yuki, but the Prius system has its quirks and USB is one of those things that can be set up to do all, or only some of the things it's capable of. Toyota only enabled a few on the Gen 4 USB feature list.

Congratulations on your new car and a warm welcome to Prius Chat.

The USB port is designed for thumb drives containing audio files. This is clearly specified in the owners manual you received. Phone charging current is not part of the USB specification.

The USB (low power port) will charge cell phones but not rapid charge phones. You need to use the 12V plug (high power port) for rapid charge. This means qualcomm rapid charge 2.0 and 3.0 captible with a high power USB 12V plug commonly referred to as the cigarette lighter adapter. I use my USB slot almost exclusively as a USB music drive.

I think you'll find the majority of cars don't have a high-powered USB port - wasn't when I checked out why mine wouldn't charge my phone.

I believe somebody needs to spend time with either the paper or PDF versions of their user manuals before they get disenchanted with a car that doesn't function as expected.

The USB cord may have something to do with your charging troubles. The USB (prius USB port) will charge a phone but the result can vary as far as the charging speed and ability. I have had many usb cords that were fighting a losing battle trying to charge my phone. This was both with the USB port as well as the 12V adapater.

The Prius does not have a high powered USB port. Some have a Qi charger for phones and all have 12V outlets for that purpose.

My 12V port works well with my Garmin GPS.

USB was not initially designed for charging devices. I think Apple was the first to abuse the standard in that way without technically violating the standard.
The car provides one or two other ways to charge a phone.
The car is primarily transportation not an entertainment center.

Not specifically. But a low current voltage source IS part of the spec.

In many cases, it IS charging the phone, just VERY slowly.
As phones get more power hungry.......and users leave all kinds of unnecessary apps running......this low current source might not even be able to keep up.

It would appear that we recently crossed the line where a "standard" USB port will no longer provide enough power to charge portable devices. It still works for my 4 year old phone........but not very fast.

Agreed, it will charge to some extent. (my SAMSUNG S2 is 4 yrs old too).

If I turn off Mobile Data (GPS is off anyway) and clear running programs and memory, mine will maintain the charge level and increase it slightly. But if I turn on GPS and/or Mobile Data, the charge level diminishes slowly, particularly in poor signal areas.

But most of the time I've got a USB Stick in the USB port anyway.

People, if your device is Qualcomm Quick Charge 2 or higher certified, the USB port in most cars won't charge the device properly, especially if you're using it while it's plugged in.

Just break down and buy a car charger that has the correct Qualcomm Quick Charge certified version for your device. Anker and Tronsmart are reputable brands I've used.
