To reduce their battery costs, Toyota invest heavily in NiMH, from nickle mining to battery production. This let them use the chemistry for less than the others. It is basically the same strategy Tesla has with the building of the Gigafactory.

It is just that NiMH costs haven't dropped much on a whole, while Li-ion is doing so. The two seem to be around the same cost now, but Li-ion is dropping still.

I have read on several PC Threads that the HV battery is now beneath the seat.

I owned a 2010 (IV) and I am virtually certain the HV battery was beneath the rear seat, although I never actually saw it.
Was the battery relocated between 2010 and 2015?

Personally, I think Tesla has the best idea. If accurate, it is attached beneath the floor. Low center of gravity.

3rd gen battery is just behind the rear seat back, top of battery is right under the hatch floor.

No change between 2009 and 2015 for the Liftback it is behind the rear seat (as per Mendel above). For Gen4 (coming 2016) the HV battery location is changed to under the rear seat. Believe this does contribute to a lower center of gravity. I wanna say Prius c HV batt may be under the rear seat also, but I am not sure.

Yup, both batteries in the "C" are under the rear seat. "Hatch area" is full of styrofoam. I presume for crash energy absorption. Makes it a little more difficult to replace the 12V BTW.

@bwilson4web The new model chassis codes are:

    ZVW50 (NiMH)

lol. The Gen 3 was ZVW-30... so it's simply just carrying over the chassis code. Also, it's interesting that TNGA didn't result in a new code.

Here are the features I was hoping for on the 2016.
    1. Solar roof like I have on my 2012
    2. Low tire pressure that shows each tire separately instead of just one light no matter which tire is low.
    3. A navigation system that allows updating of maps by usb or some other way than paying for new DVDs. My experience so far is that the maps are already out of date upon release of the car. Also, a simplified navigation system that is more intuitive.
    4. Higher clearance so the front of the car isn't always scraping on cement curbs.

So, they got a little bit wider and a bit bigger? And have a new color option of midnight blue. And only way to get LKA (TSS) with heated seats is 4Touring? And where do I find the price?

You ain't kiddin' about updating those maps. Mine can't handle some 100 year old streets. And it seems to prefer toll roads. I stick with the WAZE app on my iPad.

It's not midnight blue. Blue Crush is a brighter blue with a purple tinge. It's the same colour offered on the Corolla S and RAV4.

Four also offers heated seats and (optional) TSS-P.

Also, there's no LKA offered for Gen 4. It's LDW w/ Steering Assist. Yes there's a difference.

    Hi guys,
I'm looking to all the infos regarding Gen 4 (Hybrid/Plug-in). Did you notice a huge differences (IMO) regarding the screen size of the Japanese version vs US/European version ? Even the software navigation system seems to be different/better ?
