2016 Prius or 2016 Volt...Which should I buy?

    This was a surprise with my 2019. It doesn't have the 'kick' of my 5.7l 395 HP truck that i traded in for it, but from a rolling start (like 15 or so) I bet this Prius would still pull away from my truck. The one place I notice it a lot is how fast it keeps gaining speed is on a long uphill on-ramp where I like to be at 75 MPH, at least, to merge onto the highway. It doesn't feel fast - it feels smooth - but the speedometer shows that it is kinda quick.

    Just did the conversion to metric, that's 120 kms per hour, and as you say, "at least". To merge. What's the posted speed limit?

    Posted Speed Limit? You must be from one of those law abiding countries. You get honked at and passed doing the speed limit here.

    This is Florida. It's a fast state - merging into traffic on some of the major highways at the speed limit puts the driver's, and other drivers', lives at risk. And it would be rude as well.

    Unfortunately slow driving is 10mph over the limit.

    cars are crash tested at 45mph, death rate in a crash above 65mph approaches 100% quickly
    (as recent statistics show, fewer but more deadly accidents, more deadly single car accidents as well)

    any time speed limits are increased the spread in speed differentials increases.

    Also if two cars hit one slow to one fast the slow car usually still has the most likelihood of survival (unless it’s a moped being hit by a semi)

    people like to imagine whatever they do is the only right way to do it even if they are breaking the law.

    i read that speeding is up worldwide with the virus, and have observed it around here.

    i suspect it will not go back to 'normal' as traffic increases again. it seems to be a human 'condition'.

    i don't think most people are even aware

    I just want slow people to move out of the passing lane. people in the left lane can go 20 over people in the middle and can do 10 over and people in the right lane can do the speed limit. Speed differentials create problems. so if you take a right lane person and put them in the left lane and make the faster person go around them on the right you now have a 30 over person passing somebody in the right lane. Imagine when someone has to exit and someone else is trying to merge? Europe sorted this out by making slow people stay right. Left lane people can then go much faster safely. Speed is not the issue. Speed differential is. It's not possible to get everybody to do the same speed. Nor is it necessary. we just have to agree that slow people need to stay to the right and passing needs to occur on the left. Passing cannot occur on the left in Florida right now because slow people refuse to stay to the right. Fix that and we'll fix the speed differential and all the other arguments become moot.

    Your editorial lichens slow driving to responsibility, as if anything over the speed limit makes the person immediately irresponsible. There are so many issues with this article. Slow drivers often lack skill, focus, or both. I don't even know where to start with this one...

    Agree completely.

    I used to categorize there to be four types of drivers (I've now added a fifth, not as relevant):

    1. Fast and Safe Drivers - usually hold to German Autobahn standards and expectations as much as they can. Use turn signals, try to use the lanes correctly when they are allowed to, don't tailgate, don't try to go fast when conditions, traffic won't allow. Maintain vehicles, and change all tires out well before they hit the wear strip indicators.
    2. Fast and Dangerous Drivers - teens, some adults, VW and Mustang owners (the Mustang owners being very temporary owners - they total them a lot) in the USA... a few too many beyond-overly-aggressive Chevy/GMC pickup drivers fall into this category these days. This category used to be exemplified by BMW drivers, but isn't any longer. BMW drivers have changed categories.
    3. Slow and Safe Drivers - a rare breed, but appreciated.
    4 Slow and Dangerous Drivers - and it is this category that has proved to me to be the most dangerous of them. Often these are the drivers who cause major accidents, but aren't involved in them. When they are involved, it's usually still a bad scene. In the USA, in addition to varied cars of all types, these also used to be the majority of people who bought a Buick as a brand new vehicle.

    douglasjre has several good points.

    Sadly, though, since...we...can't...fix...stupid, I still think it's irresponsible to consider "30 over" acceptable unless the road is traffic free. It doesn't make sense to continue to challenge the slower drivers by insisting on maintaining your speed ABOVE the flow of traffic. YOU are then creating the speed differential, willfully, when the slower driver (in FL, elderly) simply are doing all they can. (...and many of those slow drivers shouldn't even be driving!)

    Yes, the left lane should be free at all times for passing, not cruising. It's virtually impossible to enforce this law, which already exists in many states.

    I gut busted in Montana in the early 90s, doing 95, no congestion, but occasionally passing cars doing 60. Young cop pulled me over, and when I protested there was no posted speed limit, he informed me of Montana's "Safe and Prudent" law regarding speed. It made no sense at all at the time, but the law requires that you reduce your speed when passing a slower moving vehicle. I learned that it was MY responsibility to adjust MY speed. My "right" to pass at any speed, even in the left lane, was negated by the recklessness of the action. And yes, willingly accepting a 35 mph hour speed differential (or less), even traveling in the same direction, is just plain irresponsible.
