I'm not sure I like this 5 inserts per wheel strategy. The way I look at it, there are now 20 chances one of them could pop off vs. 4 chances in the prior year models.

I refer to the 17" Prius wheels as Gas Guzzlers ;)

I sure hope that the 17" downgrade is avoidable in the 2016 without giving up everything else!

Yes totally agree and there is a fair chance that will happen - everywhere else around the world that is except in the UK where it will most likely be that ONLY the ECO model will be available with 15" wheels and oh, just to have an excuse when customers complain, there will be one other obscure super high end spec Prius Gen4 trim that costs more than a Lexus which also comes with the 15 inch version. :)

One thing: 3rd gen that come with 17" wheels have tighter steering, apparently less vague, more planted. If they've unified the steering mechanism, adopted the 17" version for both, that would be good.

That would be good so long as they don't sacrifice the tighter turning circle.

i wonder what percent of prius drivers opt for 17" wheels, either oem or aftermarket? and why not 16"?

The only thing that turned me off (completely) on the 15" was their wheel covers. Learned later about the different steering setup. We managed to test drive both versions, 15" first, then 17", and: with the 15" I did not feel comfortable, but the 17" were just like an old pair of shoes, had to get it.

I don't mind my 17" wheels that came stock on my level 5. I have since replaced the Toyo Proxes' with Bridgestone Ecopias and the car is way more civil to steer and I can still get middle or high 50's (when I drive more than the one mile to work). Maybe I'd gain more with 15" wheels, but the difference can't be much.

I'm sure Toyota went with something light weight for the Prius 17', or they might have had two different mpg certifications like with the Camry hybrid.

No matter if 15,16 or 17 " wheels, main thing of all is that Toyota got rid of the awful bad turning radius gen. 3 has !
Well at least the 17" wheels on gen. 3 have a far to big turning radius and they even managed to top that with the Prius v.
Can be very annoying at times!

What in the world are you talking about?

One of my favorite things about my Prius is the really short turning radius!

You call 11.80 meters for regular Prius with 17" wheels short ?
    13.4 meters for Prius v !
    Short ?
    Are you serious ?
BMW only has 10.5 meters and so did gen. 2 Prius !

I think they were more inspired by the squat toilet.

Both gen 2 and gen 3 are specified at 10.4 meters (34.1 feet and 34.2 feet, according to edmunds).

So, don't choose the large, ugly, poor-riding, low-mileage option.

10.975m (36 feet) according to edmunds.
