2016 Prius Eating Tires

    There are a lot of replies already, and I haven't read them. Don't have time, but I will give you my thoughts and it might be helpful anyway.

    I seriously doubt Toyota would have let this out with a design flaw.

    Assuming neither you nor a previous owner have been in a crash that might've bent the frame, I'd rule that out.

    Now, let's thing about what else could cause the camber to be jacked up:

    1. Carrying too much weight in the back of the car, such that the suspension is compressed beyond what is expected and it results in the camber being off as you described. Yours is a Gen 4, which I believe has double-wishbone rear suspension, which should maintain the camber angle. It would have to be pretty heavily loaded to the point it is at the extreme end of its travel. Are you carrying a lot of weight in the car, (esp. rear-biased) so that this might be what's happening? If so, replace the springs on the rear shocks with heavier ones, so it isn't riding so low.

    2. Springs are worn out or shock(s) are blown, causing it to ride low and cause the same issue described above.

    3. You say it is "chewing up tires" and wearing the inside faster than the outside. I would say that if the tires are lasting as long as they should be, but are just wearing a bit unevenly, (i.e. not bald on the inside before 40k miles or so) you don't necessarily have to worry about it. Just get new tires. It might be

    4. Is it the inside of all four tires, just the rear or just one side of the car? If it's the ones on one side of the car, it could just be that the crown of the road is causing it. For example, if the road is crowned such that you're leaning right and you often drive in that lane, the inside of the left side tires would wear faster, and the outside of the right side tires. Vice versa if you're often on the left side of the road's crown. Mix it up a little and make sure you keep up with tire rotation. (I'm sure you do, if you're the kind of guy who gets frequent alignments)

    My BMI=32, no problem. If I do have a problem I'll put another 3 psi in the drivers side tyres. :p

    OP here...yes. that is correct. Ran through the deer as opposed to into the deer...didn't have any sheet metal/glass/plastic damage.

    Cusco has just released adjustable rear upper control arms for the Gen 4 Prius. These allow for camber adjustment. A little pricy at a little over $500 a pair.

    You mean the, "Tire of Choice"? Here I was suffering from brand anxiety because I bought Hankook 727s at less than $50 each from Amazon.

    I got serious doubts about that "brand of choice." Even the Michelin MXV4's I had on my 2005 Camry were noisy as all heck. They perform well enough... but just LOUD on all road surfaces. Drives me nuts.

    Nobody believes me, but my lady friend has a 12 yr old Ford F-150, with old tires, and that big truck is quieter than my Prius. Much less road noise than my Prius. Maybe because the truck is higher off the ground, I don't know.

    Noise is an environmental experience, relative to the mitigation measures applied. Lower levels of road noise are achievable, as experienced in high-end brands such as Lexus, Acura and Lada.

    Camber and toe can be adjusted on any car with a full or half ring kit. Almost did that but decided it was not a significant problem.

    But this thread brings me to the decision to trade at 50K or buy the extended warranty.

    Knocking Michelin’s is certainly a tell.
    Obviously, the ford has better noise deadening, Prius has “none” in the wheel wells or doors or ceiling, spend some time and money on duramat and silence will ensue.

    3 fat women plus the driver will over load this car.

    Michelin’s is like a religion to some folks. I converted many years ago after several bad experiences. They started out being the only quality tire company in the world but that has all changed. Bridgestone was one of the worst and is now one of the best. So far Pirelli is working out fine. Call me at 50K.

    Also Yokohama mamas seem to be quality tires.

    There are some full surface wheel kits that will correct this problem for most cars. Castor is the tough one but a full surface kit should work for camber and toe if available.
    Also after market or new OEM suspension parts may help.
    Did you have an accident?

    You need a little negative camber for stability.

    There are time limits to file for the lemon law.
    If it is out of specks they should fix it in the first 36K. Period.

    Also you may consider trading it. 50K for tires is not bad / 36 k is bad.
