Partly because of the CR ratings, I purchased a '14. And it still has very reliable reliability figures, although the '13 actually has slightly better reliability ratings. The 3rd gen apparently could have head gasket issues, based on posters on this board and possibly compared to other Prius and Toyota models. But not compared to the entire spectrum of cars- using that comparison, your '13 has the highest reliability rating for overall and specifically engine (head gasket) issues. I have an extended warranty on my '14, and I have yet to use it for anything. All I've done is change the oil and various filters. It's an excellent car.
how is it possible to know engine reliabiity across a broad spectrum of cars, is someone tracking them?
CR’s rating variations for various 3rd gen model years stretches credulity. someone once said to me “I’m honest up to $100. More’n that: not so much”. Maybe a variation could apply: “3rd gen are reliable up to 100k. More’n that: not so much”.
This is just my guess, but I'd say in the big picture, very few of the gen 3's have head gasket issues. And a very small percentage of gen 3 owners cleaned out their EGR. Again, that's just my opinion. But by reading through this forum, you'd get the feeling that the head gasket issues are a lot worse, and many owners have cleaned their EGR's.
have you tried searching for head gasket blown on here? Make some coffee, you’ll be up all night reading
Bad things are happening between 150k and 200k miles, with tiresome regularity. And by that time the EGR cooler/valve, and intake passages, are chock-a-block with carbon. A connection? Who knows…
