2012 Toyota Prius v Pushed to Later in Fall

    Still, there's no reason to make it confusing when it doesn't need to be. Call it the Prius Wagon (as you did), the Prius Vision (or whatever the "v" is supposed to stand for), just to make it clear. That way you don't get customers complaining that they thought you were selling them a Prius v and they actually got a Prius V (or Five or whatever it's called now).

    As for car names, when manufacturers run out of actual English words they'll switch to other languages. Like they did with "Prius". Or make up a word. Elantra? Solara?

    A ridiculous name lately is the Buick Enclave. What's the attraction in driving around in a small territory? OTOH, the Kia Soul is a clever name to me.

    Maybe companies can get a good deal buying a retired name from a domestic automaker like Edsel, Corvair, Pinto, Pacer, or Aztek. :D

    Please do us a favor and spell it lower case "v" Wagon.

    Toyota didn't name it wagon for a reason. Wagons currently have a negative connotation and nobody wants to be seen buying or driving a wagon, and Toyota marketing knew this. But I agree they're making it worse by using numbers for the packages as they're too easily confused with the regular Prius trims.

    Toyota, I'm sure, knows there will be this confusion for a while. But they have decided to use single letter names for various Prius line models - and thus the c and v. I'm sure they will start to refer to the various packages using Arab numerals rather than Roman. In a few years the confusion will start to fade.

    But in the age of internet - I wonder whether they thught about search engines while naming.

    I spotted a Prius v this morning on the 405 in Irvine. It was travelling south on the back of a Toyota transporter. The car was in a metalic blue which looked really good. I had to look carefully to spot the Hybrid sign on the front fender. My guess is that it was headed for the Toyota facility in Irvine.

    Why did they stop doing so with the introduction of the gen3? For that matter, why didn't they just use the trim monikers used on most of their other models?

    Using a package designation in the cars name without an emblem on the car is like saying you have a GenericCar convenience. Maybe that's Toyota true motive for the confusing names. They never intended for the Roman numerals to be incorporated into the name as they have, and this is their way of getting people to stop with the lazy speech patterns. They probably hate text slang, too.

    They wanted it to be different, that's why there's no LE or XLE designation. It's similar to the RAV4 until the current generation. It used to be one model with various packages and you don't get a designation until you bought the top Limited package (and thus a Limited badge).

    Regardless of somebody's zero confusion between v and V the rest of us do consider it a poorly chosen name for the vehicle. I think it's really bad. I basically hate numeric or otherwise arbitrary names on vehicles, though. e.g. Mercedes CLK, Lincoln MKV, Scion xB. Do not like at all.

    With MB, I think the letters are the least of your problems. In North America, MBUSA/MB Canada have pretty much thrown the numbers out the window. Because we would never buy a C-Class with a 1.8 litre engine (C180), they kept the C230 name when they brought it over. Then the S550 and G550 (which are the S500 and G500 elsewhere) were kept even though the engines were downsized from their 5.5 litre V8. So now, it's pretty much a crapshoot as to what the engine's displacement is under the hood. (And yes, BMW is doing the same)

    In Holland the car is named Prius Wagon, in the rest of Europe Prius+.

    Smart people, those dutchmen. ;)

    Looking forward to the IAA Frankfurt Motorshow, where the introduction will be at the 15th of september.

    Hmm... my wife and I were going to purchase the regular 2012 Prius when it was released but maybe we should take a look at the Prius v. We don't have kids yet but even with one kid, the cargo space would be nice. I wonder how much the extra 250lbs will slow down the car?
    On a different note, do we know when the 2012 regular Prius will be available?

    3rd Gen Prius is 9.8 seconds, the Prius v is 11.5 seconds. I drove a Prius v all around Los Angeles and honestly, I felt like I was back at home driving my 2010 prius. It drove quite well and had the power I needed.

    Availability according to Danny is that they should begin to arrive around November 2011.

    That's why they used a shorter reduction gear, sacrificing some mileage in the process.
