GM tried the "silicon" impregnated bare aluminum cysinder black in the 4 cylinder block in the Chevrolet Vega in the mid-1970's. The iron rings cause premature wear. Aftermarket rebuilders bored out the blocks and inserted iron liners.

I remember now, my first car was a Chevy 77 Monza that came with a standard Vega 2.3 aluminum-block engine. That brings back memories. By the way it did blow a head gasket.

's because it was weird that it had an aluminum black and a cast iron head. Aluminum expanded much faster with any temperature rise than iron.

seriously doubt that rings/pistons are pounding up and down in aluminum cylinders.
Then there's connecting rods, camshafts, other machined/tight tolerance surfaces being lubricated.

I've got a new 2012 Prius Four; are metal shavings in the oil commonplace? Do you guys all just hand them the magnetic oil plug when you have your first oil change done and ask them to replace the OEM plug with it?

Any other benefits to a magnetic plug? I've never bothered with this before on any of my previous vehicles.
