2012-2014 Prius v Safety Recall J1V - Hybrid/Inverter System

I'll have to watch the meter a little more closely in the next few days. Currently I'm at 43.2 MPG indicated after 140 miles. I'd say, perhaps 25-27 miles on the highway, top speed 65.

I'm also definitely noticing a slight dip in power out of the gas engine too, which is apparent when I go to merge onto a highway. I feel like I have to make the car work harder / put the pedal down harder to achieve the same result I had, say, a month ago.

 

I too have been running a few MPG below my normal. Some things in my case could be contributing to it: air cleaner near replacement time, cold, gas formulation for winter, more rain on the roads, wind, more short trips (I bunch stops per trip but that just means a lot of starts from warm per mile. My typical into town trip includes 4 stops within 2 miles of each other after 5 miles to get to there.), I'm driving a little faster on the highway (maybe 2 MPH) and at 60+ MPH every MPH matters.

 

Exactly. One of the main effects of a thread like this one is it kind of tempts people into trying to find signal in MPG computations made in a single car over short distances under wildly uncontrolled field conditions even though we all know better.

 

Agreed. I really shouldn't get too technical about it, it'll drive me nuts.

What I'm happy about, though, is that the dealer confirmed that I now have the IPM warranty extension.

 

i had the local autozone check the check engine light and their computer said it was the ignition coil misfiring in cylinder 2 and 3. i had the reflash for the j0v/j1v done this morning and no more misfire or check engine light. related or just a coincidence?

 

@lostinheadguy : were you running higher tire pressures, andmmight they have dropped your tire pressures to spec while you were in for the recall? Just a thought.

I've had one tank post recall, and mpg's haven't varied much. It's been up-and-down, due to different weather, different driving conditions and so on. The recall was done at 79502 kms, and I've highlighted the first refill odo reading post update here:



They're all pretty lackluster, lol.

 

I too have low mpg after updating the software due to the recall. I'm not happy about this. So here's how the story goes. I took my 2012 Prius v to the dealership for an oil change in October 2018. I have been religious about getting oil changes since buying the car, always diligent, same with air filters and tire pressures, I even replaced the TOYO tires the car came with 3 times. Anyway, at that time they suggested an hybrid inverter coolant service, that it's supposed to be done at 150,000 miles. I told them next time. So in March 2019, I took the car for another oil change and asked them to service the hybrid inverter. They said ok and brought to my attention the recall. I ok'd that as well. When I went to pick up the car, I noticed that the car had so much more power when accelerating. I thought I was imagining things. I made sure the car was still in ECON mode not POWER mode. It was very odd. So I drove it as normal in the days following. I have about 196,000 miles on it and I average 36mpgs. It used to be 39 :-(. Anyway, I checked the fuel consumption. To my surprise it dropped to 31mpgs. I lost my mind! I thought maybe I should wait a month and see if it gets better. Here we are April, the mpgs changed to 34. I'm still not happy. In between all of this I called my service rep and asked why my car had so much more power. He said, it's probably because of the oil change. I said it can't be. I've had oil changes before and never have I felt more power. I asked if it was the service of the hybrid inverter. He said no. Neither one of spoke about the recall/update. I'm thinking it has something to do with the software update. Anyone have any suggestions? And I'm seeing from this post that most everyone is still getting high mpgs while I'm in the mid 30s. I drive the highway a lot (55miles per day). What can I do to get better mileage?
