2011 Prius Sunroof Deflector Seal Deterioration?

Allison, I'm in Western Washington as well, and noticed the same problem with my 2010 Prius with sunroof just a month ago, in one corner of the glass seal. Now, after cold weather, all 4 corners are warped. Did you get anywhere with your Toyota dealership?

I have a Toyota Prius G3 2010 with the same problem at the sunroof. I went at Toyota service and after an consultation with Toyota Romania, the result is to change the two glasses and some gaskets. The total cost with the materials (labour excepted, aprox 8 hours) is aprox 1000 Euros without taxes.
The repers to be changed are:
GLASS SUB-ASSY, TILT ROOF #63201-47010
GLASS SUB-ASSY, SLIDING ROOF #63201-47021
SCREW, SLIDE ROOF #65618-2130
MOULDING, MOON ROOF FRONT #63215-47010
WEATHERSTRIP, SLIDING ROOF #63251-47010.

It seems to be an issue for cars that are from cold winter regions of the world. Maybe freezing temps cause the rubber to crack and shrink. It's more cosmetic then anything else's. These cars are 8 and 7 years old now. Nothing lasts forever especially if your not maintaining it.

 

I have the same issue. I assume it's caused by UV and low temperatures. It's a shame that Toyota isn't owning this up.

 

I will say high temp going thru ca/r wash dryers, leaving out in sun during summer and not applying uv weatherization protection.

 

Add me to the list - 2013 Prius 4. Driver's side rubber trim around the front/deflector piece of glass is deteriorating...rather dismayed at the quoted costs...

 

I too, have the same issue with deteriorating weather stripping around the glass panels on the roof of our 2013 Prius. Dealer says "They have never seen or heard of this before". Dealer said that they contacted their regional district offices and were told they could not offer any assistance to us on this matter. The Dealer in a subtle way kind of insinuated that we must be washing the car with "solvent". I now have escalated the issue up to Toyota corporate.

 

Hello from Victoria, BC...YES I bought a used Prius 2010. Love the car, however this am I discovered the same problem with a bubbled rubber sunroof liner on the front deflector panel, Identical to your photos. Took it in to Prius dealership, was told my extended warranty did not cover "cosmetic" problems. The dealership has seen it before many times. Quote was $975 incl labour that involved replacing the panel. No mention of the likely hood of replacing the rubber seal around the whole sunroof.

Was advised to crack the deflector and claim it on my car insurance...very sketchy advice from a dealership!!

Totally disappointed with Toyota's response. Of course it will leak and will ultimately be a lot more than just cosmetic. I would like to see a permanent solution from Toyota as this seems to be happening across Canada. BTW...it happened here in unusually cold weather for a Victoria.

 

We had exactly the same problem and were quoted $900 to fix the air foil at the dealership, or $1500 to replace the entire sunroof system.

EASY FIX: before shelling out, we took it to a local auto glass place. They'd seen it before and fixed it in 15 mins for FREE! Simply snipped the stretchy piece and re-glued. VOILA...fixed. And has stayed fixed for the past year. And hey! If it doesn't work, you can always shell out the $1500.

BTW...auto glass place it was only cosmetic anyway.

 

Has anyone looked into (or tried) replacing the front deflector piece on their own? Looking at it in person (and at the expanded drawing of the sunroof) it looks like it is held in place by Torx screws on each of the support arms and additional Torx screws on two hinge/pivot brackets at the front. Is there an additional attachment/restraint location under the front molding piece that the deflector fits under?

 

I have the same problem with my 2013 Prius that I just purchased at a used car dealer here in Central New Jersey. The car only has 22,000 miles on it and it's in great condition otherwise. The original owner took good care of the car. I noticed the rubber cracking and coming off in different areas before I purchased the car. When I first saw it, the rubber was up in the air some areas in loops. The dealer said they would repair it and put it in writing before I purchased the car. They were disappointed to learn however that it was going to cost them $1,500 + Tax to replace both the moon roof and the glass deflector entirely. See pics below.

 

I am in UK and have just noticed that the plastic trim around the deflector glass has grown, detached and cracked on my 2010 Prius. The trim around the opening glass panel has also cracked. There are very few of these roofs in the UK, as the glass roof was an expensive extra. I look forward to hearing how you get on, as the complete failure of this part seems very unreasonable.

 

I have the same issue in upstate NY which began on the deflector only 4 years after getting the car. Same response from the dealer: it's part of the glass and not covered, the only way to fix the rubber is to replace the whole glass. When it first happened and the dealer wouldn't do anything under warranty, I took it to a glass place which reglued the rubber. That fix lasted about 9 months and the rubber began peeling and warping quite badly over the winter. I have been trying to find another fix for months with no success. Went recently to a sun roof installer to see what they could do and again nothing but replace the entire assembly which as you all know is extremely expensive. Apparently the rubber is heat-sealed onto the glass edge by the manufacturer which is why the available glues they were considering apparently don't work.

The deteriorating rubber is a shoddy manufacturing issue, IMO. I see no reason why rubber should degrade so fast.

 

It's no different then rubber used on windshield wipers. If exposed to the elements on daily basis it's going to degrade as the years pass. It's also how you have treated the rubber. Did you wash the car weakly? Treat the rubber with a UV blocker. These are things that will help increase the life of all the rubber components on a car.

Probably won't get far but you can try. I got the number a year or more ago on the claim on the second as in when the replacement sunroof and deflector shield failed just like the first one. I didn't see why something fixed under warranty the first time should have been repaired with parts with the same defect.
I don't think anyone will get any joy at all on this.
There is zero point in spending the money on a repair if they cannot say for certain that the materials they are currently using will not fail and in my case within a few months of installation the decay was starting.
I was put in Colin's hands after having made direct email contact with the president of Toyota Canada and he, Colin was put in charge of giving me the none deal on the repair of a factory defect.

 

My dealer here in Sweden has replaced both sunroof glasses twice during warranty, but the rubber seals/weatherstrip do not withstand the climate with cold winter & snow and hot summer days. I've been very careful and not used any chemicals, but still they detoriate (see attached photo). Wonder if anyone has found a more permanent solution that looks okay and stay in place? Or is the only solution to remove all rubber seals and be happy with the way it looks? It's only cosmetics... Unfortunatly the glass edges are a bit rough and it looks odd with all those gaps. (sorry for my bad english).

 

2011 Prius, same issue. Toyota quotes $1034 to replace the sunroof. They said it won’t leak. They gave me a number of 8 0 0 3 3 1 4 3 3 1 to call.

 

I've had a similar problem for the past couple years with my 2012 Prius. I took it to the dealership a year ago and they said it would cost a couple thousand to completely replace the window. I DON'T BELIEVE IT'S ENTIRELY COSMETIC. I live in the Seattle area and it rains often and it gets inside the car. For the last couple of years, I've experienced condensation on the inside of my windows during all times of the year and it's gotten worse as the gasket continues to deteriorate. In freezing temperatures I have ice on the inside front windshield, warm temperatures I have condensation on the front windshield. I'm going back to my dealership to see about getting it fixed since it is a defect.
