I have been driving my wife's 08 Prius almost daily for 3+ years, she has owned it for 7+ years. Both of us are very familiar with the start/stop button. In the last month, often but not always, it seems like we have to press the button multiple times before it would "boot up". We replaced both of our fob batteries with no real change. In the last week, she had mentioned that it started on its own twice. I thought it was impossible for that to happen. Now yesterday and this morning, it has done it to me. I know I powered it down as I normally do, park pbrake "start/stop", close then lock the door. As soon as I open the door in the morning, all the lights power up with the gauges and the center display. I can put it in gear and drive away. I do have an aftermarket remote start installed, we usually only use it in the winter and don't even have it on my keychain right now. It has worked flawlessly for 3 years. I did have The windshield replaced in the last two weeks. Just throwing that in there because it's the last significant change to the vehicle. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated!!

Is it possible that the power button is failing both on the start and stop function?

Yes. Las Vegas. My car doesn't start by itself in the heat either. But it does greet me with a nightlight to say hello when I come close to it. It likes me.

This just reminded me of my theory about geomagnetic storms (solar storms from flare discharge) charging the battery full instantly. When the energy hits the earths atmosphere there's quite a bit of electric energy in the air and I've had a few times with my new to me 2013 plug in where the battery will go from empty to full with one quick push on the brake. Just a theory. But if its not a faulty start button or relay maybe a charge from our atmosphere started it. LoL. I can imagine the looks on people faces when they read this. Yes. Im not a troll but im not real consistent here yet either. Thanks.

I am having a similar problem. My 2010 Prius with 180,000 miles just started by itself while I was standing near it working in our garage. It had not been driven in two days and yes, it was definitely turned off. The Prius shut itself off when I opened the car door. I had it to the dealer two weeks ago as I smelled gasoline fumes from the car while it was parked in the garage. The dealer could not find anything....but whatever may have been loose or leaking seems to have been fixed. I no longer smell gasoline. It has a solar fan....in case that matters. I purchased the car new in 2010 and other than having to replace brake systems a few times, it has been the best car I have ever owned. This problem mystifies me. Any suggestions for what I should have checked?
